Women’s soccer ‘Canes qualify for ACAA championships

The Hurricanes tied one game and lost the other this weekend, clinching a playoff berth in the process. On Saturday the ‘Canes visited the Saint Thomas University for a matchup with the Tommies. Kristin Hood led the way for the Hurricanes scoring two goals; her first was in the 17’ while she later scored at the start of the second half, in the 48’ of the game. Logan Kennedy replied for STU in the first half, the teams entered halftime tied at 1-1. The Tommies Olivia Jennings scored in the 61’ to tie the game. It would ultimately end in a 2-2 tie.
The tie would give the Hurricanes the point that they needed to ensure their spot in next weekend’s ACAA championships hosted by Holland College.
On Sunday the Hurricanes made their way across New Brunswick to the Canada Games Stadium in Saint John to take on the UNBSJ Seawolves.
The Hurricanes Kristin Hood scored in the 15’ to give the Hurricanes the early 1-0 lead in the game; this would be her third of the weekend. Later in the half, the Seawolves would tie the game with a goal by Emily Smith. The teams remained tied through halftime.
In the second half the Seawolves broke free with goals in the 63’ and 74’ by Hannah McLeod and Emily Smith. They would hold onto the 3-1 lead until the final whistle.
The Hurricanes end the ACAA regular season with a 5-4-3 record and finish in fourth place in the standings. The top four teams qualify for the ACAA Championships in Cornwall, PEI this weekend, being played at the Terry Fox Complex.
The tournament gets underway Saturday, October 26th when the ‘Canes take on the first seed University of King’s College Blue Devils at 12:15 pm. In the previous two meetings between the teams the Blue Devils were victorious on September 8th 2-0 while the teams tied on September 29th 2-2.
