12 Days of Christmas countdown #9: McKinnon and Hood earn major PEI Soccer Awards
December 16, 2013
The look of the women’s soccer Hurricanes changed quite a bit from last season, and their tenacity was rewarded with a trip to British Columbia for the CCAA women’s soccer championships.
Kris McKinnon and Kristin Hood were two important components to the team’s success, and their work was rewarded by the P.E.I. Soccer Association; McKinnon was named Coach of the Year, while Hood was named Junior Female Player of the Year. Their accomplishments put them in the ninth spot on the Hurricanes’ 12 Days of Christmas.
McKinnon had been an assistant coach with the Hurricanes since 2011, and he took over as head coach for the 2013 season. McKinnon entered the ACAA season with a young Hurricanes squad, and he got the most out of his young players en route to the school’s first ACAA women’s soccer title since 2010. Outside of Holland College, McKinnon also coached the Stratford under-14 boy’s premier team, the under-13 boy’s provincial team, and was part of the Young Player Development Program.
Meanwhile, Hood experienced great success wherever she played. Coming off an all-star season at Charlottetown Rural, Hood went on to play for Team P.E.I. at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que., before joining the Hurricanes. As a rookie, she led the team in goals with 12, which was enough to make her an ACAA First Team All-Star. She was a constant threat regardless of where she was on the field, so she got a lot of attention from opposing defenders.
The Holland Hurricanes will be counting down the top 12 moments from the 2013-14 season so far, beginning Friday, December 13th until the #1 moment is revealed on Christmas Eve on their website and Facebook page. Count down with us as we celebrate the Hurricanes successes as we enter 2014!
