Hurricanes Men's Volleyball
Charlottetown - The gym on the Holland College campus will be busy this weekend as the Hurricanes host the UNBSJ Seawolves for four games on Saturday and again on Sunday.
Basketball Preview
In women's basketball action, the Hurricanes (7-10) will face the 8-8 Seawolves. The Hurricanes struggled with UNBSJ in Saint John in January, losing 68-49. At the same time, the ‘Canes have shown major signs of improvement of late, losing by two to third-place MTA last Sunday. Two wins this weekend would propel the team ahead of the Seawolves in the extremely tight battle for playoff position.
Hurricanes Head Coach Mike Connolly is not overly concerned with playoff match-ups. His focus continues to be on seeing his team improve.
"We know that we'll be playing MTA, UNBSJ or King's in the first-round of the playoffs. UNBSJ gave us problems last time, so this weekend will be a solid test to see how far we have come. I am pretty happy with our progress, but we need to continue to progress with March 2nd in mind. I think we can beat any of our potential quarterfinal opponents, but to do that we have to be playing well, doing the little things right. That's our focus," said Connolly.
In men's basketball action, the Hurricanes (10-7) face the 1-16 Seawolves. The ‘Wolves are playing for pride at this point, but the Hurricanes know they cannot afford to take their opponents for granted. Guard Jamie Gray explained the team's mind-set.
"They have a couple good players and are not a team we can just show up and beat. We need to come out and play hard and play well. If we do that, we should be in good shape. We definitely cannot take them lightly. That's when you get into trouble," said Gray.
The ‘Canes, currently tied for fourth with King's still have an outside chance at a first-round bye in the ACAA Championships being hosted at Holland College March 2-4. They have four-remaining games and will have to win all four to have a chance at the bye. The biggest test will come next Saturday when the Hurricanes host the second-place STU Tommies.
Volleyball Preview
The women's volleyball Hurricanes will finish the 2011-12 Season this weekend with their two games against UNBSJ. The team is still looking to get into the win column, entering the weekend at 0-16 thus far. The women have showed great determination throughout a very tough season. Head Coach Amanda Hickey is looking forward to the weekend.
"It has definitely been a tough year, but I am proud of how the girls have competed. UNBSJ will be tough, but if we play well, they are definitely beatable. The girls are looking forward to the challenge and we'll be ready to go," said Coach Hickey.
In men's volleyball action, the Hurricanes are 9-1 and will be looking to sew-up first place after the completion of league play. The men will compete in the ACAA Volleyball Championships hosted by STU next weekend. In UNBSJ, Holland College faces a team going through a rebuilding process. The normally strong Saint John team has a 2-8 record entering the weekend. They only trail fourth place Sainte-Anne by two points and will need at least one win, if not two to overtake USA and get the final playoff spot.
Coach Joe Ryan's team has had to overcome some injuries of-late, but he's confident his team will be ready for their final home-stand.
"This is a big weekend for us. We can secure a first-place finish in the league for one, second and more important though, is that we can finish strong and head into the playoffs playing well and confident. That's basically what we'll be trying to accomplish this weekend," said Ryan.
