Hurricanes Women's Hockey: Captures Wins as Host of Women Hockey Challenge

The Holland Hurricanes women's hockey team came away with a record of two wins, a tie and a loss in the weekend tourney hosted by Holland College. The Hurricanes were pleased with their results as they surged up the standings in the intercollegiate tournament format.

The Hurricanes opened the tournament with a solid effort against the Cape Breton Capers winning by a five to three margin. The Canes were led by a two goal performance by Shalan Graham with single markers going to Abby MacCormack, Candace Arsenault and Molly Gotell.

In their second matchup the 'Canes faced Bishop's University and despite controlling the play for most of the game the 'Canes had to settle for a two-two draw. Scoring for the home squad was Shalan Graham and Candace Arsenault.

The Hurricanes' only loss of the tournament came at the hands of UNB who jumped out to an early four to zero first period lead and played strong defense for the final two periods. Jessica Stoddard did manage to score a goal early in the second period for the 'Canes but that was as close as they could come with the game ending four to one for the visitors.

In the final game of the weekend the 'Canes played well throughout the contest scoring in all three periods for a five to nil shutout win over the Universite de Sainte-Anne. The shutout was recorded by Holly MacLeod and the goal scorers were Alison Squires with two and singles by Haley Mullen, Elly Arsenault and Vanessa French.

Coach Chris Aiken was optimistic about the weekend's performance by the Canes, "We saw a noticeable improvement in our team from the first tournament and we now know that the hard work will pay off for us as we go forward. The players were a little disappointed with not achieving a three win weekend but they made great progress and we are looking forward to getting stronger".

After the twelve-game tournament it was UNB finishing in first with a 4W-0L record, Holland College and Acadia at 2W-1L-1T, Bishop's and CBU at 1W-2L-1T and Sainte-Anne at 0W-4L. The tournament was the second of five in a rotation that moves around the Maritimes with the top two teams eventually playing off for the Challenge Cup.

The Holland Hurricanes women are excited to host the January stop in the Maritime Intercollegiate Challenge Series at the Charlottetown Civic Centre this weekend. The tournament is the second of five events featuring university teams from Bishops, UNB, Acadia, Sainte-Anne, and Cape Breton and the host Holland College. The six teams compete for placement in the five tournament format before the top two teams playoff for the league title.

For the Hurricanes this weekend will be an important opportunity to move up the standings as the Canes are currently placed fifth after the first tournament in November. The first year coaching staff consists of Chris Aiken as head coach along with assistants Robyn MacDonald, and Genna Phalen. All three have worked hard to improve on the fundamentals and create a team personality that is built on hard work.

Coach Aiken admits the team has to build on the results of their first tournament to be successful this weekend. "We have had quite a break in play and we have a lot of players who are new to this level of competition. When we combine these two factors our goal will be to improve on our endurance and focus in order to get some wins". In the first tournament Aiken recognized the challenges, "We were impressed with several teams, especially UNB, who had good depth and competed hard throughout the entire game". The coaches are hopeful that the friendly confines of the Civic Centre will help produce some favorable results. "Our players should respond well to playing at home and we are confident they will raise their game to a new level"

"Our goal is to hopefully win 3 games. We have strong goaltending, with both Holly MacLeod and Jessica Enman having great work ethic and will not quit. Our defense is anchored by Mary Katherine Power and Haley Mullen. Up front some players to watch are Kristen Moen, Meagan Ferguson, Molly Gotell, Candice Arsenault, and Allison Squires".

Play begins on Saturday with the Hurricanes playing the Capers from Cape Breton at noon.
