Day Two Cancelled Due to Rain at 2011 PING CCAA Golf Championships - Men's Golf; Women's Golf
Roseneath, PE - Heavy rain has cancelled the second-round of the 2011 PING Championships. Tournament officials met with the team coaches early Thursday morning and the decision was made to cancel the second-round, making this year's championships a two-day event.
As Thursday went on, it became even clearer that the right decision had been made. Rain pounded down on eastern PEI for most of the day.
Holland College Athletic Director Albert Roche was disappointed to lose the round.
"With the amount of rain that had come down and what was expected for Thursday, it just was not practical to send the players out on the course. It's disappointing on many levels and we know the players want to play. We cannot control the rain, we just have to look ahead and plan for a great final day tomorrow," said Roche.
He added, "I was so pleased with yesterday. We had great weather and the players put up some great scores. It has been great to see the tremendous displays of sportsmanship and camaraderie that have been displayed throughout the week as well. While it is a shame to lose a round to the rain, it does give the players a chance to spend more time together. It has been great to see them enjoying that part of the event."
Adrian Cord of the front-running Humber Hawks as well the men's individual leader going into Friday's final-round is looking forward to getting back on the course.
"Nothing really changes. The course will be wet, but it was already wet so we weren't getting any roll Wednesday either. As a team we'll just go out and play our games. We have a nice lead, but you never know what can happen. We're focused on playing our best," said Cord.
When asked about the individual competition, Cord has this to say.
"I know I'm going to have to put up a good score to hold off Mark (Hoffman) and the rest of the field."
With the tournament shortened by a day, some teams are happy with where they sit entering the final-round, while others feel they have one less day to make-up ground after a disappointing first-day.
The host Holland Hurricanes men enter the final-round tied for second in men's team play.
Head Coach of the Hurricanes men's team is Jeff Hughes. Coach Hughes is pleased with his team's positioning going into Friday.
"I'm pleased to be sitting in second. No question. I definitely think we have a lower score in us though. Our guys are very comfortable with Brudenell and they've played the course in a variety of conditions. I'm hopeful that it will serve as an advantage when we hit the course. We played the ACAA Championships in heavy rain and the guys were able to persevere," explained Hughes.
Hurricanes veteran Jeremy Stevenson, commented on the team's mindset going into Friday.
"With it being down to a two-round event, we just have to put it all on the line tomorrow. We're focused and ready to play well tomorrow. It should be fun. We'll all be in groups with Humber and Camosun guys (top-three teams) so that should make things interesting," said Stevenson.
"We haven't medaled at this event in several years. I definitely feel like we're due," he added.
The women's competition should be very tight. With only three-strokes between first-place Durham and second-place Douglas College in team play, anything can happen.
Lauren Schmidek of the Mount Royal Cougars who currently sit in third place in women's team play had this to say about Friday's round.
"We are looking forward to playing Friday. We love playing in messy conditions because it always seems to bring out the best in us," said the second-year golfer.
In women's individual play, everyone is chasing defending champion Josee Doyon. Doyon leads by five-strokes over UBC-Okanogan's Alana Kent.
With lots of close races in team and individual play, Friday should be a great day of Golf at the Brudenell River Golf Course. For all the latest scores and updates go to www.ccaagolf2011.ca or follow the championships on Twitter at www.twitter.com/PINGCCAAGOLF_11.
