Hurricanes Men's Volleyball: Host STU this Weekend

The undefeated men (7-0) will hope to keep their winning ways going as they know this weekend's two matches against Tommies (4-4) could go a long way in solidifying a crucial 1st place going into the championships in February.

Coach Joe Ryan sees the opportunity but is caution of what his team needs to do in order to be successful "We are coming off a successful match last weekend against STU.   While I feel we can hold our own offensively with teams, I feel we have work to do defensively at the net and on our serving game.    This is something that we will be working on over the next couple of days to correct."

Canes player Brandon Boyce echoes Coach Ryan's comments "This weekend against STU we are expecting two very tough matches. We played them last weekend, and we know what to expect, a very talented team.  Everyone on our team has to be on top of their game to come out with a victory this weekend"

The Canes will hit the floor on Saturday starting at 8 PM  again on Sunday 2 PM both matches against STU and are played at the Community Centre for Engagement on Holland College Prince of Wales Campus.

The men will take their 1st place undefeated record of (5-0) and match up to a surging 2nd place STU team on Saturday to which anything can happen with their rivals as indicated by coach Joe Ryan "The men's league this year is so close and with the current four top teams anyone of these teams can win against any other team. Our match against STU is going to be a real challenge for our team. We played them at the Tip-Off tournament with not great success, but then again, we didn't have much success against any team that weekend. That was a long time ago"

Canes player Jeremy McKinnon sees the importance of staying on task this weekend "The team is looking really good, but as all athletes know, it's important to continue to practice and improve on our abilities both on and off the court.  We're continuously polishing up a few things for the ACAA Championships in February. The team has had a great start to the season, but we know that it is very important to remain focused on our end goal of winning the ACAA Championship."

The men will hit the court at STU on Saturday at 330 PM and then on Sunday VS UNBSJ at 12 PM.

Hurricanes Men's Volleyball: Looking to Keep Wins Coming

The men has been perfect thus far with a 4-0 record sitting on top of the ACAA standings in first place and will hope to continue their winning ways as they welcome the Universite Sainte-Anne to town on Sunday at 12 noon at the Community Centre for Engagement.

The Holland College Men's Volleyball Hurricanes are anxious to start the second half of season on Sunday at Home against a familiar opponent and coach Joe Ryan wouldn't want it any other way.

"The men's league this year is very tight and we have already played Sainte Anne in the first half of the season and were fortunate to win both those matches on the road.   Hopefully we will be able to line up against them to shut down their more offensive players."

The men's team is leading the ACAA league with a perfect 4 - 0 record and this has earned them their first ever National Ranking currently ranked 13th in the CCAA .    Even with this ranking, coach Ryan is taking it all in stride.   "To be honest, I am more impressed and satisfied with the 4 and 0 start and I am preaching this to the team.   If we continue to win and remain in first place in our league, that will be a major accomplishment and importance leading into the Atlantic Championship.   Whatever National recognition the team receives because of these efforts is just a bonus."

The Hurricanes are lead by 2nd year captain Jeremy McKinnon but Ryan also stresses the importance of other key players such as Brandon Boyce and Adam Foy.

"Adam came into school after a few years out of High School and was placed in a position of setting which he was not accustomed to.   He has handled the challenge very well to date and is learning and getting better everyday."

For Boyce, the situation is the opposite.

"Brandon has been coached very well in his volleyball career to date.   He comes from a great High School program so he understands the game and his position very well.   I would say he is one of the best passers in the league, so he will continue to be a primary serve receiver for us for the rest of the season."
