Holland Hurricanes Men's Basketball opens season Saturday in Fredericton

Charlottetown, PE - The Holland Hurricanes men's basketball team open their 2009-10 ACAA season this Saturday when they travel to Fredericton to play St. Thomas Tommies at 3 p.m.

The Hurricanes had a relatively successful pre-season going 4-4 and in doing so had the opportunity to play two AUS schools, losing to Memorial by 8 and Acadia by 20. Included in their four victories were two wins over US Division Two schools.

The Hurricanes, who are currently carrying a 15-man roster, have a good balance of six returning players and nine first year players. Key returning players include Aaron and Steve Brown, Steve Hardy and Jacob Ayangma. First year players include Donnie Moss from the Bahamas and two products of the Island high school system, Matthew Morrison from Colonel Grey and Nick Jones from Bluefield. The Hurricanes have a new addition to the coaching staff as well. Coach George Morrison is pleased to add former Colonel Gray and UPEI Panther Chris Connolly to the staff.

One of the Hurricanes pre-season losses was to St. Thomas, so coach Morrison is expecting his team will have their hands full on Saturday. Compounding the difficulties will be the fact that they most likely will be without two starters due to injuries, Steve Hardy (concussion) and Matthew Fowler (collar bone)

The consensus among league followers is that the league is more balanced and stronger overall than last year, with Mount St. Vincent and Crandall maybe being a bit weaker than last year but STU, Mt. Allison, UNBSJ and Kings all being considerably stronger.

After this weekend's league opener, the Hurricanes return home next weekend to play two games against UNBSJ.
