Saturday, the teams will face MSVU with games at 4 p.m. (women) and 6 p.m. (men). Sunday, they will take-on King's with the women playing a 12 p.m. and the men following at 4 p.m.

The men's basketball team will face two very tough opponents this weekend. The team enters the weekend with a 9-3 record, good for third in the ACAA. The Hurricanes lost to MSVU in two home games in November while they beat King's in two tight home games in January. The Hurricanes are coming off two road-wins over NSAC and MTA. Currently, the team is two points behind second-place STU.  The first and second -place finishers receive byes into the ACAA Semifinals. The Hurricanes still have their eyes on one of two byes.

Head Coach George Morrison explains, "We're not looking too far ahead, but at the same time getting a road win over MSVU and/or King's would be huge for us in terms of our chances of getting a bye."

A key to any success the Hurricanes will have this weekend will be their ability to defend and rebound against bigger teams.

"King's has J.D. Howlett and MSVU has Luke Reynolds. Those are two tough match-ups for us as we're just not very big. We're going to need to play great team defense, have everybody rebounding the ball and we're going to have to shoot the ball well to win," said Coach Morrison.

Hurricanes Guard Matt Morrison also knows the team needs to be ready for the size of their opponents this weekend. "They both have some size so we'll have to be ready for that. At the same time, they have to guard as too and we are going to have to use our quickness and shoot the ball well. These are two winnable games for us. We'll have to play well, but they're both very winnable," said Morrison.

Halifax, NS - The Holland Hurricanes men's and women's basketball teams will be in Halifax this weekend for a pair of games against the MSVU Mystics and King's College Blue Devils. Saturday, the teams will face MSVU with games at 4 p.m. (women) and 6 p.m. (men). Sunday, they will take-on King's with the women playing a 12 p.m. and the men following at 4 p.m.

    Women's Preview

The Hurricane women enter the weekend with a 4-8 record. They have a firm grasp on the sixth and final playoff spot and are only two points behind the fifth place King's College Blue Devils. That makes Sunday's game with King's all that much more important.

According to Head Coach Mike Connolly, new opponents bring new challenges, but his focus is much as the same. His team is still in search of consistency.

"Last week we had one good game and one disappointing game. That has been a pretty regular thing for us and it's definitely something we continue to work on," said Connolly. "MTA really gave us problems last weekend. They have definitely improved throughout the season. I am pretty sure they'll finish third in our league (behind STU and MSVU). That makes are game against King's very important. We're 1-1 with them right now and if we have a chance of getting to fifth, we'll need to find a way to win on Sunday," added Connolly.

Hurricanes guard Lindy MacDonald also commented on the weekend.  "Saturday will be our fifth straight road-game. That's tough, but we're going to be ready. MSVU is a tough team, but we just need to take care of the ball and not let them take us out of our game. If we can do that, they're beatable," explained the Antigonish native. She added, "As for Sunday, that's a game we need to get."

Charlottetown - With the last road trip of the season for the men and women volleyball team the canes are seeing the regular season coming to an end as the women travel to NSAC on Saturday and MSVU on Sunday while the men will travel to play UKC on Sunday in ACAA volleyball action.

With three matches remaining for the men it is a chance to make a great season a special one as the Canes have a chance to go undefeated with a 9-0 record but will be facing their toughest competition to date in the 2nd place UKC Blue Devils (6-3) where in the previous match up in November (19 & 20) both evenly matched teams went to the fifth and deciding set where the Canes prevailed 3-2 in each contest.

Coach Joe Ryan sees the importance of this week's contest "We played King's prior to Christmas and came away with 2 very close 5 set victories. Are we the favorites going in - possibly", says coach Joe Ryan, " but when you win two matches by a total of 10 points, it's hard to say who the favorite would be. We know they are going to be very prepared for this match on their home court."

Securing first place does give the coach options leading into the final 3 matches of the season. "Players are coming off injuries and some are playing through some pain. With us already securing that important number one ranking, it now will give us the opportunity to give non-starters more playing time in these final matches."

Max Arsenault and Tyler Bernard are 2 players that coach Ryan is looking to play a key part in this weekend's match. "Max has been playing the Libero position very well this year. His serve receiving is getting better every game. Tyler is starting to understand his minor issues with his position. Once he understood this and made the correction, I am seeing a better result from his offense. These two players have to play well this weekend to be successful."

On the women's side the win-less Cane (0-14) will have their work cut out for them this weekend if they are hoping to secure their first win of the season as they face 4th place NSAC (7-5) on Saturday and the first place MSVU (11-1). In their previous match up the Canes were not able to secure a win in ether match.

The women will play on Saturday at 1:00 PM in Truro against NSAC and again on Sunday at 3 PM versus MSVU. The men will play on Sunday at 4 PM vs UKC in Halifax.

The undefeated men (7-0) will hope to keep their winning ways going as they know this weekend's two matches against Tommies (4-4) could go a long way in solidifying a crucial 1st place going into the championships in February.

Coach Joe Ryan sees the opportunity but is caution of what his team needs to do in order to be successful "We are coming off a successful match last weekend against STU.   While I feel we can hold our own offensively with teams, I feel we have work to do defensively at the net and on our serving game.    This is something that we will be working on over the next couple of days to correct."

Canes player Brandon Boyce echoes Coach Ryan's comments "This weekend against STU we are expecting two very tough matches. We played them last weekend, and we know what to expect, a very talented team.  Everyone on our team has to be on top of their game to come out with a victory this weekend"

The Canes will hit the floor on Saturday starting at 8 PM  again on Sunday 2 PM both matches against STU and are played at the Community Centre for Engagement on Holland College Prince of Wales Campus.

On the women's side the canes will be hoping home court will help rally the troops in securing a badly needed win against a strong Tommies team (7-3) in what has been a winless season thus far for the Canes.

Coach Amanda Hickey-LeBlanc knows she is in tough but  is hopeful of a good showing "STU is known for having an outstanding volleyball program. Our team is practicing very hard this week in preparation for the matchup with this very tough team. I am looking for a great match and hopefully different results than when we traveled to their gym last weekend."

The Canes will hit the floor on Saturday starting at 6 PM  again on Sunday at 12 Noon  both matches against STU and are played at the Community Centre for Engagement on Holland College Prince of Wales Campus.
