Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Basketball player Jennifer Hinds and Brandon Boyce from volleyball have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 19.

The Hurricanes hosted the UNBSJ Seawolves on the weekend and Hinds came up big, delivering two terrific performances in two Hurricanes victories. Saturday, the Hurricanes won 83-66. Jennifer was unstoppable scoring 26 points on 11-16 shooting and also grabbing 16 rebounds for a double-double. In Sunday's 80-75 win she had another great game recording another double-double this time scoring 16 points and hauling down 17 rebounds.

Jennifer is a native of Groveland, Massachusetts and a student in the Foundations program at Holland College.

Boyce takes the male honour for his part in volleyball wins on the weekend. The men's volleyball ‘Canes also defeated UNBSJ, winning 3-2 and 3-1. Boyce led the team in service aces and also played a key role defensively for the Hurricanes.

Head Coach Joe Ryan commented on Brandon's play saying, "When Brandon gets on a role with his serve, he makes it tough on the opposing team and we usually put some points on our side of the scoreboard. Defensively and as a serve receiver, you will not find a better position player in the league. If he plays that role the way he can and is the offensive threat I know he can be, we will have a successful weekend at the Atlantic Championships."

Boyce is a first-year student in the Sport and Leisure Management program. He is from O'Leary, PE.

    ISLAND JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE EXPANDS
    WITH ENTRANCE OF HURRICANES

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE APRIL 3, 2012: The Holland College Junior Hurricanes are now members of the Island Junior Hockey League. Holland College made the official announcement this weekend. The ‘Canes will join existing franchises for the 2012-2013 season, the Charlottetown Abbies, Western Red Wings, Kensington Vipers and Sherwood Falcons.

The Junior Hurricanes revived their Men's Hockey Program in 2010 and have spent the past two seasons operating as part of the PEI Junior C League.

The Hurricanes will participate in the Midget Entry Draft later this summer as they form their roster in preparation for the 2012-2013 season. The team will continue to look for the top hockey talent at Holland College over the summer, before the team's training camp begins in early September.

"Our goal has been to create the most professional hockey program possible from day one; we've made great strides in doing so but still have work to do. We have a dedicated group of people on and off of the ice working very hard to bring this program to the level where we want to see it", said general manager, Daniel Cudmore. "The move to this league is the next step. We have a new group of scouts in place to assist in bringing the most talented hockey players to our program, and our group has already begun speaking with potential players for next season. We have a plan in which we hope to contend for a championship in the upcoming seasons. Our goal is to bring a championship banner back to Holland College."

Head coach Ryan Maxwell enters his second season behind the bench with the Men's Hurricanes, this is what he had to say on the move, "I am excited about the opportunity to join the Island Junior Hockey League. It's a league that has a rich history and as an organization we are very proud to be a part of. Moving to Junior B allows us to continue our vision of making Holland College a destination for young hockey players looking to pursue an education while playing a high level of hockey. All this would not be possible without the hard work of our management team and their desire to bring hockey back to the college and run a first class organization. Starting now, the hard work begins. We will be working over the next few months to attract top student athletes as well as sponsors to help our team succeed and ice the most competitive team possible.

Holland College has done a tremendous job building many of the existing programs, like soccer, basketball, football, volleyball and golf to name a few. I'd like hockey to achieve the same success as these sports and bring a championship to the college. We'd like to say a big thank you to Jim Chandler, commissioner of the Island Junior Hockey League as well as Athletic Director Albert Roche for recognizing our vision and passion to grow the hockey program at Holland College".

The Holland College Junior Hurricanes play their home games out of the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Training Camp will begin in early September and any potential players interested in being emailed an information package on the Holland College Junior Hurricanes hockey program are asked to contact the team's general manager, Daniel Cudmore at dcudmore@hollandcollege.com.

Amanda Wheatley Captures Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Year

Manager of Athletics & Recreation Albert Roche presents Amanda with her award

Hurricanes presented Amanda Wheatley as this year's Female Athlete of the Year award winner.

It is very gratifying to observe each year as we grow that the caliber of athletes keep getting better and as we will see with our Athlete of the year nominees keep raising the bar in terms of high level performance and successful achievements of awards and accolades.

Nominees

Female Athlete of the Year nominees-

Bobbi Wilson - Bobbi Wilson joined the Hurricanes on the women's golf team this year from Oromocto, New Brunswick. Bobbi jumped into form early winning one and tying for the title in the other in the first two ACAA tournaments last fall. She followed this performance by winning the ACAA individual Championship at Brudenell. Bobbi wasn't able to push to the podium at CCAA nationals and the team settled for a fifth place finish. After the golf season Bobbi joined the volleyball Canes where she was a starter for much of the season. She as well earned the status of Academic All Canadian presented earlier this evening. Our first nominee Bobbi Wilson.

Amanda Wheatley- The next nominee has achieved a tremendous amount of success at Holland College. Two years ago she was selected as the Female Athlete of the year and after a year off at work as a paramedic she returned this past year to her Advanced Paramedicine program and she was primed to get the soccer team back to the championship. This year she is league all-star, was selected as the winner of the Gerry Leblanc league award for Leadership, Athletic ability and Fairplay, and was chosen as a finalist for the league most valuable player award. Tonight her coaches chose her their team MVP and for good reason -Amanda has been instrumental in the rise of women's soccer and the'Canes achieving their spot in the league championship game losing 1-0 in a battle of two great teams. Amanda was the spirited leader and backbone of a young team where she poured her heart out game after game.

Lindy MacDonald - The success of women's basketball this season was due in large part to the poise and leadership of Lindy MacDonald. Lindy symbolizes what is right about varsity sport with undying loyalty and dedication to team and school. Emily led the women's basketball team to an 10-11 record good for 4th place into the ACAA Championships this season. averaging 16 points and 7 rebounds per game and assists with almost 7 per game for the season, Emily was named an ACAA 1st team all-star and earned a spot as an All-Canadian. She always plays with passion and determination. Lindy, from Antigonish Nova Scotia, was bestowed basketball team MVP honours tonight which illustrates the significant impact she has had on her team.
