Junior Hurricanes: Looking to Build on Saturday's win

The Holland College Junior Hurricanes continued their dominance at the Charlottetown Civic Centre, squeaking out a 6-5 victory over the Charlottetown Halliwell Consulting Abbies on Saturday night.

The win sees Holland College improve to 6-3-2 for the season, including a 5-0-1 mark at home.

It also puts the Junior Hurricanes squarely into second place in the Razzy's Junior C League, and their sixth victory of the season already surpasses their total from all last season.

Zach Bennett fuelled the Holland College offense once again, scoring four more goals and adding an assist to give him league-leading totals in both goals (16) and points (21).

Allan Burton scored the game-winning goal with 10:48 remaining in the third period, banging home a loose puck from a Bennett shot that squeaked through the pads of Charlottetown goaltender Chris Chandler.

The goal came less than two minutes after Charlottetown's Kyle Osmond scored a shorthanded goal to tie the score at 5-5.
Osmond's second of the game came shortly after Hurricanes captain AJ McInnis thought he had scored a highlight-reel goal that would have added insurance to what had been a 5-4 Holland College lead.

Colin Lennon also scored his first of the year for Holland College off a beautiful pass from Darren Cairns early in the second period.

In addition to Osmond's two goals, the Abbies had goals from Jeremy Stevenson, Kory MacDougall and captain Rodney Hynes.
Both teams scored twice in 10 power-play opportunities in what was a penalty-filled affair.

Holland College lost defenseman Robert Mercer early in the first period after fighting Abbies forward Chris Hedefine, who nailed Hurricanes forward David Wamback with a clean hit in open ice.

Due to being assessed instigator and aggressor penalties, Mercer was given a three-game suspension.

Jeremy Kinch turned aside 24 shots for Holland College, while Chandler stopped 26 shots for Charlottetown.

The Junior Hurricanes now shift their attention to this Friday night, when they travel to the APM Centre to tangle with the North River Island Excavators Flames in their first tilt since the teams had a line brawl on November 19.
Game time is at 7:40 p.m.

  • Junior Hurricanes: Enter Big Weekend in Schedule

Seven games into the season and the Junior Hurricanes are happy with their positioning. With eight points in the standings they are already close to passing last years point total of 10 for the entire season. With just two losses, three wins and two ties versus the Atlantic hosting Tignish Aces, the 'Canes 3-2-2 record puts them in a tie for second in the league standings.

A few changes were made during the off-season, including a overhaul to their coaching staff, but many things have remained the same. Goaltending has not been touched, Sean Letourneau and Jeremy Kinch have split the duties this year and both have show improvement in goal over last years numbers. Defensively the 'Canes have five of their seven players returning to the blueline. Newcomers Stephen Gould graduated from the Sherwood Midget program while Robert Mercer is attending Holland College after playing Junior hockey in Newfoundland last season.

Offensively the 'Canes have made the biggest improvement. Zach Bennett currently leads the league in goals scored and is sitting in the top ten in the scoring race with 15 points, Jonathon Power is right behind him with 14. With just four forwards returning this year the team has relied on young rookies and veteran's coming over from other junior teams to help change the tide. A new attitude has been put in place by the coaching staff and the results have shown.

The 'Canes will play their eighth game of the season this Saturday night at home when they welcome the North River Flames (2-4-1, 6th place) to the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Game time is 7:05 pm. All Holland College students receive free admission to the game with your student ID, all other tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Flames are just three points behind the Hurricanes so this should be an exciting game. The Flames have turned their game around in recent weeks and should be a tough test for the Hurricanes.

Sean Letourneau will be starting in goal for the Hurricanes. As of now the only scratch for the Hurricanes will be Robert Mercer.

The 'Canes will then hit the road on Sunday as they travel to Tignish to challenge the Aces. Thus far in two games between the two teams, both games ended in 3-3 ties after sixty minutes of regulation time and a five minute overtime period. Game time is 6:45 pm in Tignish and live game updates will be available on the teams Facebook and Twitter pages. Jeremy Kinch is expected to get the start in goal.

The Holland College Junior Hurricanes kicked off the new PEI Junior C Hockey League season in grand fashion, winning both of their games over the weekend at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.

Tyne Valley Clover Farmers vs. Hurricanes

In the Junior Hurricanes' home opener on Friday night, a five-goal outburst in the first period was more than enough for Holland College as they cruised to a 9-3 victory over the visiting Tyne Valley Clover Farmers.

Bennett also added an assist on Jonathon Power's first of two goals on the game to finish with a seven-point night.

Stephen Gould added a power play marker in the first to round out the Hurricanes scoring.

For Tyne Valley, Evan Ballum led the way offensively with two goals and an assist, while Keaton Noye had the other goal for the Clover Farmers.

Special teams played a pivotal role for the Hurricanes, who went 3-for-5 on the power play while only allowing one power-play goal in 10 shorthanded situations.

Sean Letourneau made 26 saves for the Hurricanes, while Aaron Arsenault and Chase Dyment combined to make 43 saves for Tyne Valley in a losing effort.

Southside MacDonald's Excavators / EF MacPhee Lynx vs. Holland College Junior Hurricanes

The Junior Hurricanes showed no signs of fatigue on Sunday afternoon, as another offensive outburst left Holland College with an 8-4 victory over the Southside MacDonald's Excavators / EF MacPhee Lynx to close out a perfect home opening weekend.

Defenseman Robert Mercer led the way for the Junior Hurricanes with a hat trick and an assist, including a pair of key power play goals in the third period to seal the victory.

Junior Hurricanes:Cudmore Excited About Possibilities For Upcoming Season

By Geordie Carragher

Charlottetown, PE - The Holland Hurricanes men's hockey team is set to kick off another season in the PEI Junior C Hockey League, and their general manager is eager to get started.

Daniel Cudmore, who coached the Hurricanes to a record of 5-23-0-0 in their inaugural season, stepped back to focus on managerial duties over the offseason in an effort to improve the team's prospects for the 2011-12 season.

Cudmore addressed some of the key issues ahead of Thursday night's second intrasquad game between Team Maroon and Team White.

Cudmore, along with the rest of his staff from last season, realized that things needed to change if the team was going to contend this season.

"Midway through the season, it was myself who was doing double duty with managing the team plus coaching. We started to realize part way through the year that you're spreading yourself too thin."

"Sometimes, it's not fair to the team to show up and only be able to provide half your level of commitment, half on managing and half on coaching, so it was just too hard to focus on both 100 percent."

Cudmore said the hiring of former Charlottetown Abbie and UPEI Panther Ryan Maxwell as the team's new head coach was an important step in the right direction for everybody involved in the program.

"It was almost meant to be, Ryan just took a job at Holland College as a transitions mentor, and obviously with his playing background, we realized that he's going to demand respect because he's done it all."

Respect in the dressing room is a major theme for Cudmore, who said there was a bit to be desired.

"We felt that lacked last year, we needed a more intimidating presence in the dressing room."

Cudmore said Maxwell will force players to be more accountable to themselves and the team.

"I think last year, our mistake was that we let things get away from us early in the year and it's tough to get it back after that."

Cudmore said they approached Maxwell last season about an early transition, but he remained committed to the women's hockey program.

He said that adding Drew Power to the coaching staff along with Maxwell will be another key component of the team's success.

"Drew just graduated from the police academy, so there's another tie through Holland College. He's can have an intimidating presence, you work hard or he's going to start asking questions."

"That's the type of guy we need here to be on top of the players."

When asked about what kind of team he and Maxwell envisioned building for the upcoming season, Cudmore said they shared a similar vision.

"We want to be a team that's hard to play against. The guys that don't want to come to the rink and work won't play and they'll be in the stands, and the guys who want to work, which we hope all of them do, they'll be the ones dressed."

Cudmore said he's optimistic that the team will be able to jump out to a fast start this season.

"They've been impressive so far, and I can't wait to see how it all fares out next week."

The Hurricanes play their first two exhibition games next week, with both games being against Pownal. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14 at 8:30 p.m. in Pownal, and then they will play again the following night at 7:05 p.m. at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
