Charlottetown, PE - The Holland College Hurricanes Football Club recognized the extraordinary contributions of eight players in its Atlantic Football League championship season and paid tribute to an exceptional booster club member at its annual banquet recently.
Linebacker Ben Sherren received the award for Most Improved Player, linebacker Thomas McCabe received the Student Athlete of the Year award, and the APM Construction Services Defensive Player of the Year was middle linebacker and team leader Marcus Dunphy, who completed his playing eligibility this season. For the second year in a row, offensive guard Owen MacWilliams was chosen as Lineman of the Year. Running back Dave Clark received the APM Construction Services Offensive Player of the Year award. Clark, who rushed for 1,498 yards and scored 15 touchdowns this season, was also in his final year of eligibility. Defensive end Ryan Adams, who led the team in tackles, was named Rookie of the Year. Special Teams Player of the Year was Stephen Corcoran, and the award for Most Dedicated Player went to quarterback Nick Hunsley, who passed for almost 1,600 yards and threw 14 touchdown passes and only five interceptions.
The Hilton Trophy for Most Valuable Player was awarded to Demetrius Ferguson, who, in spite of playing with his wrist in a cast this season, amassed 10 touchdowns, seven on kick returns, two on interceptions, and one on the ground. Former UPEI All-Canadian and member of the PEI Football Hall of Fame Mike Lyriotokis presented the trophy to the crowd-pleasing Ferguson.
The team also presented an award to booster club member Gus Cameron, for his support of the team.
The Hurricanes will hold tryouts and minicamps in the spring as they prepare to defend their title in the 2012 season. For more information about the Hurricanes, visit hollandcollege.com/football or facebook.com/HCFootball, or e-mail football@hollandcollege.com.

Hurricanes Football Club takes AFL championship
Charlottetown, PE - Under a steel-grey November sky the Holland College Hurricanes celebrated their Atlantic Football League championship victory over the UNB Red Bombers. The 28-0 win on Saturday afternoon, in front of 2,800 fans at MacAdam Field, earned the Hurricanes their first-ever Moosehead Cup and the first regional championship for any PEI football team since the St. Dunstan's University Saints in 1960.
The Hurricanes scored on their first possession after a Nick Hunsley pass to H-back Leslie Green put the ball on the UNB 30-yard line. Two plays later, lined up in the wildcat formation, the ‘Canes Demetrius Ferguson took the direct snap from center and pierced the line for a 9-yard touchdown. Phillip Lanthier's convert made it 7-0.
Late in the second quarter it was Ferguson again, this time from his safety position, who intercepted a Jeffrey Madsen pass and weaved his way downfield, found another gear at the 15-yard line to beat the final would-be tackler, and strode into the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown. The convert made the score 14-0 for the Hurricanes.
In the final two minutes of the first half, running back Dave Clark ripped off two big runs up the middle to take the ball inside the UNB 5-yard line. Hunsley then rolled out to his right off a play-action left and found slotback Robbie Tufts all alone in the end zone. Holland College took the 21-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, it was the Hurricanes' league-leading defense that controlled the game. The Red Bombers did not make it into the red zone the entire afternoon, as they were shut down time and again by the ‘Canes' ferocious play.
Holland College added a final major with 1:44 left to play when Clark bounced in from the 1 yard line, making the score 28-0. The run gave Clark 118 yards rushing on the day, on 18 carries, and an even 1,500 yards rushing in what has been an incredible season for the Charlottetown native.
The APM Construction Services offensive player of the game was Demetrius Ferguson, who scored two touchdowns and played offense, defense and special teams during the game. Ryan Adams, the dominating defensive end from Boston, picked up defensive honours for another standout performance.
The Hurricanes will lose a veritable constellation of stars from this season's championship team. It was the final year of eligibility for middle linebacker and team leader Marcus Dunphy. Clark, too, has completed his AFL eligibility and is considering playing options in the CIS or NCAA. Demetrius Ferguson, who came to Holland College following a stellar high school career in both football and track at Greenwich High School in Connecticut, will graduate to the next level, as well. Several other players will also have decisions to make about their football futures, as their individual play and the program's success has attracted attention from university programs around the region and beyond.

Hurricanes Football Club advances to AFL championship game
Charlottetown, PE - The Holland College Hurricanes defeated the Dalhousie University Tigers 38-7 in Atlantic Football League semi-final playoff action at MacAdam Field on Saturday afternoon.
The victory puts the Hurricanes in next weekend's AFL championship game against the UNB Red Bombers, who won their semifinal game 23-22 against last season's champion UNB Saint John Seawolves.
There is a football adage that applies to late-season games - you must run to win. On a blustery November day with winds whipping around the stadium, it was apparent from the outset that Holland College would rely on its ground game. On their first possession, 'Canes running back Dave Clark capped a drive with a 36-yard touchdown run. Phil Lanthier added the convert, and the Hurricanes took an early 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Dalhousie conceded a 2-point safety on a third-and-long situation with the ball on their own 5 yard line. Minutes later, it was a big defensive play by the Tigers that set up what would prove to be their only score of the afternoon. A blocked punt gave them the ball on the Holland College 6 yard line and running back Greg Pelly took it into the end zone to make it a 9-7 game.
A determined Hurricanes offence took up the challenge. Quarterback Nick Hunsley connected with Jared Sutton on a 20-yard pass that put the 'Canes in the red zone. On the next play, Clark blasted through a huge hole and into the end zone for the touchdown. With a 16-7 lead and momentum on their side, the Hurricanes struck again before the half ended. Jeff Hillier lined up a slot right and took the pitch on a sweep left, galloping 60 yards untouched for the major. A failed point-after left the score at 22-7 at the half.
In the third quarter, strong defensive play by Holland College once again forced Dalhousie to concede a safety. Choosing to kick off, the Tigers put the ball in the hands of the ever-dangerous Demetrius Ferguson, who took it right up the middle of the field on a 70-yard return for the touchdown. The convert gave the 'Canes a commanding 31-7 lead.
The wounded Tigers attempted one last attack before the quarter ended, but it was the Hurricanes defence who earned their stripes when they stopped them in their tracks at the Holland College 5 yard line. Taking over on downs, the 'Canes were quick to deliver the final blow to the Tigers' hopes. Once more, the big offensive line produced a truck-sized gap and Clark was off to the races, going 105 yards for his third major of the day.
The fourth quarter produced no scoring as the Hurricanes played shut-down defence. The final score was 38-7. The APM Construction Services players of the game were Dave Clark on offense and Wildens Sertyl on defense. Clark ran for 250 yards on just 14 carries, giving him 1,382 rushing yards on the season. Sertyl, an outside linebacker out of Malden High School in Massachusetts, was in on half-a-dozen tackles and played a big role in shutting down the Tigers' offence.
The AFL Championship game against the UNB Red Bombers is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at MacAdam Field. When the two teams met two weeks ago in Charlottetown, UNB pulled off a 28-26 win, serving notice that the championship final should be a battle from start to finish.
