HURRICANES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Holly Bernard
Tye Vaillancourt

The Holland Hurricanes male and female athletes for the week ending October 5, 2008 are women's soccer player Holly Bernard (Borden-Carleton, PE) and men’s golf player Tye Vaillancourt (Smith Falls Ont).

Holly Bernard is a Borden-Carleton, PEI native and is currently enrolled in her first year in the Business Administration program at Holland College Charlottetown Centre. Holly is a veteran striker for the Hurricanes and is providing strong leadership for the team throughout the season. She is a key component to the Hurricanes undefeated success thus far. Holly’s ability to hold and distribute the ball in the opponent’s offensive zone this weekend against UNBSJ and STU was instrumental in Hurricanes two wins. Holly led by example in both games, creating offensive chances and capitalizing on them for an important Hurricanes 6 point weekend earning her this week’s athlete of the week honors.

Tye Vaillancourt is a native of Smith Falls (ON) and is currently enrolled in the Golf Club Management program at Holland College Tourism and Culinary Centre. Tye is in his first year on the Hurricanes golf team and has been a welcome addition to the team as they prepare to host the 2008 Ping CCAA Open Golf Championship next week. Tye won the men’s individual ACAA title over the weekend and was a major contributor to the Hurricanes 1st place team showing at the Championships held this past weekend at Fox Meadow Golf and Country Club (Stratford, PE). Tye shot a 2 under par 70 in windy conditions at Fox Meadow where he had 1 birdie on the front nine for a 35 and follow up on the back with two more birdies and a bogey for another 35. Tye’s great shot making abilities has earned him this week’s athlete of the week honors.

Rob Aiken

The Holland Hurricanes male and female athletes for the week ending September 28th, 2008 are women's soccer player Amanda Wheatley (Warren Grove, PE) and men’s soccer player Rob Aiken (Cornwall, PE).

Amanda Wheatley is a Warren Grove PEI native and is currently enrolled in the Primary Care Paramedicine program at Holland College Charlottetown Centre. Amanda Wheatley plays the position of keeper for the Hurricanes and is a major contributor the Hurricanes success thus far. Amanda’s ability to come up with the big save has been a crucial component of the Hurricanes undefeated season. Amanda has played in all seven games for the Hurricanes only allowing 3 goals in total including this weekend’s 1-1 tie (Mystics) and a 1-0 shutout on Sunday (Kings). Amanda’s ability to shutdown opponents has earned her this week’s athlete of the week honors.

Rob Aiken is a native of Cornwall (PE) and is currently enrolled in the Sport and Leisure Management program at Holland College Charlottetown Centre. Rob is the veteran corner piece to the Hurricanes wall of defense in the position of fullback. Rob’s ability to track down opponents and stifle their offensive abilities is a prominent reason for the Hurricanes undefeated first place season thus far. Rob’s consistent strong play has contributed to the Hurricanes defense distinctiveness to which they have allowed a minuscule goals against average of 1.50 in six games. Rob’s play over the weekend helped the Hurricanes post back to back shutouts (1-0 Mystics, 1-0 Kings) and has earned him this week’s athlete of the week honors.


HURRICANES TAKE TOP HONORS AT ACAA GOLF OPEN HOSTED BY MOUNT A

Hurricanes Men's Golf Team

A total of 26 golfers took to the course at Memramcook Valley Golf Club over the weekend to participate in the first of three ACAA golf tournaments. In men’s play there were four teams represented by Holland College, Mount Allison and STU, complimented by individual players from NSAC. Five women also played as individual participants, representing Mount Allison, NSAC, STU and Holland College.

HURRICANES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Morgan DesRoches

The Holland Hurricanes male and female athletes for the week ending September 21, 2008 are women's soccer player Danielle Kok (Morell,PE) and men’s soccer player Morgan DesRoches (Alberton, PE).

Danielle Kok of Morell is in her first year of the Sport and Leisure Management program at Holland College Charlottetown Centre. Kok in her first year with the Hurricanes helped the Canes continue their unbeaten streak over the weekend. New to the striker position, Kok scored a much needed goal late in the 2nd half versus UNBSJ resulting in a 1-1 tie. On Sunday, it was the rookie again that opened up the scoring for the Hurricanes from 20 yards out late in the first half, helping gain a 2-0 victory over STU.

Morgan DesRoches of Alberton is currently enrolled in Small Business Management program at Holland College Dalton’s centre. DesRoches receiving his second back to back athlete of the week honors for his offensive abilities on the field. DesRoches scored two goals in the Hurricanes 3-1 victory over the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday and for an encore performance on Sunday tapped in two more to seal the STU Tommies fate in a Hurricanes 2-1 win. DesRoches has a total of 8 goals in the Hurricanes early season and is key contributor for the Hurricanes success thus far.

2008 Ping CCAA Golf Open Championships Planning Going Well

The organizing committee for the 2008 CCAA Golf Championships being held at Fox Meadow Golf Club in Stratford October 13-17 is pleased with how the plans for the national event are going.The schedule for the three-round, week long championship event is set and the team entries are arriving daily.

Tournament director Albert Roche commented on the planning for the event saying, “We’ve got a great week planned and we’re really committed to setting the standard for hosting a CCAA Championship golf event. It’s a great opportunity to showcase the type of golf courses we have here on the island as well as to show the best college golfers our country has to offer some island hospitality.”

The tournament committee is also very pleased to have Honourary Tournament Chair Bob McGee involved in the event. McGee brings and wealth of tournament experience to the event and has played a big role in laying out the week. “It sure looks like it’s going to be a great week. I’m really looking forward to meeting the players and watching all the action. The tournament has a great feel to it and I fully expect that we’ll put on a great show,” said McGee.

Fox Meadow Golf Club Course Manager Harry Simmons is also looking forward to the tournament adding, “We are really excited about hosting the best college golfers from all over Canada here at Fox Meadow. The course is in great shape and should provide a great test for the field."
