Applied research attempts to solve problems or take advantage of market opportunities by developing new products, processes or services. Existing technology may be used in new ways, or new technology may be developed.
The Applied Research department at Holland College supports economic development in Prince Edward Island by solving technical and business problems for industry and community clients using the college’s expertise, equipment and facilities. Applied Research projects enhance the quality of college programs and services and provide unique hands-on learning opportunities for students.
Holland College provides subject matter expertise, lab and workshop space, assistance in the preparation of research funding proposals, linkages to outside expertise and resources, and project management support, while industry partners provide guidance, expertise, and financial support.
Applied research projects are mutually beneficial. Students gain invaluable hands-on experience and interact with industry partners, and college instructors remain connected to industry trends, improving communications and providing professional development opportunities. Industry partners are able to develop new products and services in a cost-effective way, while protecting their intellectual property.
The expertise and research capacity of our faculty and our industry partners are reflected in our two main research pillars: Social Innovation, and Science and Technology. The college also considers projects that are outside the scope of these areas on an individual basis.
The Applied Research department is proficient in the preparation of research ethics applications, and confidentiality and non-disclosure documents, as well as IP negotiation, metric tracking, and financial accountability to help ensure students, staff and industry are protected while participating in applied research projects.
As an NSERC eligible institution, Holland College’s research mandate supports discovery and innovation as a key to Canada’s economic prosperity. Holland College is compliant with Tri-Council policies on ethics. The Research Ethics Board meets quarterly and provides review for all research projects at the college. A research advisory council meets regularly to provide input into the Strategic Research Agenda, the policies governing research and intellectual property at Holland College. Research policies are compliant with Holland College ISO 9001: 2008 Certification. For the most current information regarding Applied Research, click here.
