The Plumbing program is developed from nationally identified skills for piping occupations. The objective of the program is to provide training for individuals preparing for a career or who are currently involved in this field. The program also allows for specialization in installing process pipe and tubing, natural and liquefied gas, plumbing, heating and instrumentation and fire sprinkler and standpipe systems.

Plumbers and plumber apprentices install and service hot and cold water distribution piping, plumbing fixtures and appliances, waste and vent piping, wastewater disposal and hot water heating in systems in residential, commercial and institutional applications. Natural and propane gas lines, medical vacuum and medical gas, process piping and fire standpipe systems are also installed by graduates of this course.

Occupational Health and Safety

This course is designed to introduce students to safety issues in the Pipe Trades. Topics included in this course are: First Aid, CPR, WHMIS, fire prevention and extinguishing, occupational health and safety legislation and welding safety. In addition, this course will cover all safety concerns that are identified in the student handbook.

Pipefitting and Piping Assembly I

This course is designed to introduce students to the materials and methods of joining pipes in the pipe trades. Included in this course are plastic, cast iron, fibre glass, historic and copper pipes. This course also includes the use of hangers and supports, as they are required for piping systems.

Red Seal Information

Apprenticeship Training Logo

The most successful path to a Red Seal as a plumber begins with the Plumbing program. This program enables you to earn 1,360 hours and write one block exam, which puts you well on your way to Red Seal certification. Upon graduation, once you are working with a suitable employer, you will register as an apprentice to complete your journey to challenge the Interprovincial Exam. When you register, Apprenticeship PEI will give you credit for the hours earned and block exams passed while you were at Holland College.

The Interprovincial Red Seal gives you the ability to work anywhere in Canada without further testing or certification. The Red Seal is recognized as the Interprovincial standard of excellence for your chosen trade and is the designation most employers will ask for.

  • Preference will be given to applicants with Grade 11 or 12 physics
