The Music Performance program will train musicians for the commercial music and entertainment industry. Students will be able to interpret and perform many contemporary music styles such as rock, country, funk, R&B, jazz, Celtic and world music and have a strong understanding of the theory, analysis and influences of contemporary music styles. Students will also learn the business aspects of a self-managed career in the music industry.

Throughout this course, students will identify personal goals, review their progress and implement strategies for improvement.

Music Theory: Introduction
In this course, students will be introduced to basic music theory and common musical notation used in the music industry today. Students will learn about clefs, note recognition, key signatures, scales and intervals. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have a comprehensive and literate vocabulary of basic musical terms and symbols, scales and a working knowledge of basic intervals.

In this course, students will learn the basic aural perception skills required to function as a professional musician. Students will listen to examples and pieces of music and learn how to describe individual parts and the effects created by the combination of these parts. Students will learn to perceive simple intervals and pitches, chords and chord progressions, simple rhythms, and harmony and tonality through aural skills. Students will demonstrate their aural skills through musical dictation and sight-singing.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to develop plans for musical tours and recording projects as well as demonstrate an understanding of the music publishing business.
