Students in the Medical Support Services program may choose a course of study in four profile areas:

  • Medical Secretary
  • Health Unit Coordinator
  • Medical Clerk
  • Medical Secretary Transcriptionist

Full-time program offerings are held Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. or Monday - Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Other training options for this program are available through continuing education and customized learning plans developed in consultation with a Program Learning Manager.

Other Medical related courses are offered on an ongoing basis via Distance Delivery.

This profile prepares learners to work as secretaries in a variety of health care environments, including private physician's offices, allied health clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities, or medically focused government departments and agencies. Learners choosing this profile will gain valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in medical transcription. This unique skill set will broaden employment opportunities and is a pre-requisite to the Medical Secretary Transcriptionist profile. Learners will gain valuable work experience through supervised on-the-job training.

On-the-Job-Training (OJT) is an essential part of student learning. The OJT provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their competencies, gain confidence and build on the skills acquired during formal instruction. Students are expected through the application of their skills on the job to "add value back" to the employer. This course is designed to familiarize the learner with the text and online resources for confirming the spelling and usage of drug and medication terms, and medication and prescription related abbreviations. This course is designed to develop a student's ability to produce accurate documents from audio resources - local and network based. The student will learn to operate transcribing equipment and internet transcribing software, apply medical document formatting requirements, the AAMT style guide criteria, and develop efficient listening-keying competencies. Also inherent in the competency is the student's ability to access text and internet sources to confirm correct spelling and usage of terms and abbreviations, to develop intuitive recognition of the placement of information within the document, and when and how to indicate anomalies.
