PM Should Make An Example Of MP
by Dan Benoit

The scandal dogging Solicitor General Lawrence MacAulay in recent weeks has earned front page play in just about every newspaper in Canada day after day.
In fact, the P.E.I. Liberal MP has probably never had so much attention thrust upon him.
Too bad for him it’s because of an investigation to see if he’s unethical and whether or not the prime minister is going to fire him.
Opposition members are alleging MacAulay did some shady deals, like using his political influence to affect whether or not Holland College, which his brother Alex heads, would get a $6 million contract from the RCMP.
He also handed out a $140, 000 untendered contract to a friends firm to advise him on matters relating to his department.
“You can never have too much good advice,” he told the House of Commons.
Well, here’s some advice for the prime minister.
If it turns out the guy’s guilty of cronyism and patronage, can him.
No speechs. No excuses.
I don’t care if MacAulay is Chretien’s lapdog.
Hand him his walking papers.
More than that, get the RCMP involved if there’s grounds for criminal charges.
I’m no political expert, but it sounds like some of the things he’s been accused of doing are bad enough to merit more than a slap on the wrist and a shove to the back benches.
Make him one of the teeming mass of the unemployed.
Nothing personal, Lawrence.
