Has it really been eight years since Toby Keith burst on to the scene with the hit single Should've Been A Cowboy. He has continued to grow musically since that effort and his new album Pull My Chain is no exception.
The first single off this album, I'm Just Talking About Tonight, is a fun, light hearted song about a guy who is not ready for a commitment, but is looking for a one night stand. There is no getting around the nature of the song.
The opening lines, ÒWell, I'm not talking about locking down forever baby that would be too demanding. I'm just talking about two lonely people who might reach a little understanding,Ó pretty much say it all about the song. The second single and track on the album, I Wanna Talk About Me, is a song about how devoted a guy is to his girl, but at the same time is sick of hearing her talk about herself all the time. It's a real party song if you like country music, or in the case of more open minded music listeners, it's a good party song, period.
The album has it's tender moments as well, with songs like So Much To Lose and Trying To Matter. So Much To Lose actually sounds similar to an earlier song of Keith's, Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You.
Even the biggest Toby Keith fan would have to admit that the Sha La La La Song is lame with a capital L. I Think ÒSha la la laÓ covers about half the lyrics in this song. Enough said.
The highlight of the album is Gimme 8 Seconds. It is the Album's Bonus Track or cut 13, but it features some excellent guitar work. Admittedly, you don't hear these styles of guitar riffs too often in country music.
All in all though, it was a good effort by Keith, perhaps his best album to date, other than that one bad apple on the disc.
If you like Keith's last album How Do You Like Me Now, you'll like his latest effort Pull My Chain.
