Moody and melodic sum up Moist's latest release, Mercedes Five and Dime. Tracks such as Underground and Mike Hammer best display this mood and melody with duelling keyboards and acoustic guitars. This duel is enhanced by intergalactic and underwater sounds for an amusing dramatic effect. Moist seems to have gone Beatlesque on Mercedes with experimental sounds. This venture can be heard in the first single, Breathe, in which lead vocalist David Usher's voice is distorted. Feedback on the track, Alive, also mutates Usher's otherwise soft voice. Not to worry David Usher fans, his quiet singing is prominently featured on the album. Tortured relationships, running away and being depressed are central themes of Mercedes Five and Dime. Topic-wise, this CD is basically the same as Moist's previous three releases. However, alienation has been the main focus of Œ90s rock and Moist has cornered the market on this issue.
