College memories special

by Ian Whynacht

The scene is a Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. A Journalism student is sitting at his computer reflecting on his last 18 months.

This will be the last column I'll write for the Surveyor so I wanted to write the best one that I'm capable of.

I remember coming through the doors of this college last year on my 19th birthday. I was the small-town kid just two months out of high school. And man, was I ever nervous.

Then I met my instructors, Wayne Young and Martin Dorrell, and I realized how my life would change for the better. We lost Martin this past October and things haven't quite been the same since, but we persevered and I still feel that college has been the best experience I've ever had.

Our class didn't fall behind in our curriculum and we still managed to get those annoying magazine stories finished on time. We also managed to get those tedious city council and legislature ratings.

Speaking of the college, I had my doubts about this competency-based training, but I don't any more. It's the best way to go. What better way to learn than to write and have a newspaper to submit it to?

It also makes things easier when it comes to making friends in your classroom. Some of the best friends I have and ever will have are in my classroom and scattered throughout Charlottetown Centre and ATHI/CIC.

Some of my favourite memories have come from our class parties and playing various sports with my classmates and friends.

There are so many things to remember about my time here. I'm going to remember the class Christmas parties, volleyball and basketball nights and playing for the Holland College basketball team.

This year's Goodwill Games are also a fond memory. Jason Malloy, Annette Thornley and I fell short in the three-on-three tournament, but once we had the rest of our friends the next day we had a lot of fun in the volleyball tournament.

I'll also remember how learning managers such as Alex Murchison and Dean Vokey helped me when I needed an interview for a story.

I'll never forget either how much help Ruth Skinner, Lorne Hughes, Frank Morrison and Donna Sutton were while I was here.

To all of my friends: It's been a fun ride. We've had some great times doing this paper for the past year, and even though most of us are still here it feels like something is missing or will be soon.
