Cafeteria/lounge survey results tabulated by student union

by Laura Jean Grant

The cafeteria/student lounge surveys put out by the Charlottetown Centre student union are in, and the results have been helpful in giving it an idea of students' feelings towards the area.

"The majority of the people don't use the student lounge," says Student Union President Tammy Wall, who explains this was one of the major discoveries in the surveys.

While students are not using the lounge much, the cafeteria is doing well with most students saying they use it on a daily basis.

Wall says she is pleased about the cafeteria being well-used, but the student union is more concerned about the lounge because it is more directly controlled by the students than the cafeteria.

The cafeteria is run by a private company while the lounge is run by the college.

"Our basic focus is the lounge," says Wall.

She is happy with the number of surveys turned in.

"We got back mostly all we sent out, give or take a few," says Wall.

"It gives us a good guideline," she adds, "We actually got a lot of ideas."

The main ideas highlighted by a number of students were to have more couches and chairs, more after school activities, and better lighting and new paint to brighten up the area .

The student union is currently finalizing a proposal on behalf of the students to be submitted to Jake Baird, the executive director of human and corporate services. The proposal is made up of all the results of the surveys, including the many recommendations by students.

The overall goal of the survey, Wall explains, was to give students a say in what happens to the lounge. The student union wants everyone to be comfortable in the lounge area and use it as a place to hang out and have a break.

Wall says the only renovations done to the lounge was the construction of a ramp.

Wall hopes these surveys will lead to changes for the better.
