by Laura Jean Grant A new strategic plan which will place more emphasis on initiatives to raise money for student scholarships has been adopted by the Holland College Foundation, says chairman Albert Fogarty. The plan will raise additional money for new awards. The foundation is attempting to concentrate its efforts on raising money for scholarships and bursaries, and move away from other things the foundation used to do, like provide funds for capital expansion and other projects at the college. "The main purpose is to raise funds for scholarships and bursaries for post-secondary students at Holland College," states Fogarty. Fogarty says it's crucial the foundation help out the students, with tuition at the college being so high. "There is more of a need now than ever, ever before," he says. One clear example of the foundation's impact on the college and students was at the recent awards night held at The Atlantic Tourism and Hospitality Institute on Jan. 27. The foundation is responsible for raising the money for those awards. Fogarty explains that the foundation invests and collects interest on, donated money, which is then used for scholarships and bursaries. The foundation is responsible for the 91 awards that were presented at awards night. The scholarships involved some 154 students, however, as there were multiple winners of certain awards. The total monetary value of the evening was somewhere between $80,000 and $90,000. The main goals the foundation has for this year are to adopt the new strategic plan, reorganize the board of directors, and hire one person to help the board of directors with the new campaign, says Fogarty. The first two of the three goals have been accomplished. Some other things the foundation does that students should be aware of, says Fogarty, are providing awards at program graduations and giving emergency financial assistance to students in need. The foundation is also involved with the Alumni Association which is in the midst of compiling an up-to-date list of past graduates that they hope will date back to 1969. "Right now we're putting together a database," says Fogarty, of the foundation's involvement with the alumni. Although the foundation is helping out in several areas of the college's operation, Fogarty emphasizes that it's concentrating more and more on raising money for the students. Hence, the new strategic plan in place. "Right now all of our efforts are towards students," he says.
