Vet college recieves $18 million
By Heather MacAdam
The Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI has recently received over $18 million in funding from the federal government.
Canada’s four veterinary colleges received a total of $113 million.
AVC external relations officer Heather Jordan said the money will be used to expand the college.
“We’ve outgrown our capacity,” she said.
Jordan said an additional $12 million is needed to complete the expansion project, but declined to comment on what exactly the new building would be used for.
In 1983 construction of the college cost $38.5 million. The federal government paid half. The rest was shared between the four Atlantic provinces according to the number of seats reserved for their students.
When the college first opened 50 students were accepted a year. Nine seats were reserved for international students the rest were divided among the Atlantic provinces. Today, the college accepts 60 students a year and there are about 300 students attending.
The expansion project at the AVC should be completed in two years.
Western College Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan received over $22 million, Ontario Veterinary College received over $37 million, and the veterinary faculty at the University of Montreal received over $35 million.
