Communication in the Arts

This course is designed to provide students with the necessary skills required for success in their chosen area of study. Through the exploration of various forms of communication including verbal, nonverbal, written and interpersonal; students will develop the ability to effectively communicate within the College and Art environments.

Technology in the Arts

This course will assist the student in developing competency with computers and computing technology as when in the educational and artistic setting. Using Microsoft Office, students will be introduced to typical desktop tools to create and manage information including: word processing through desktop publishing, web design, spreadsheets, and electronic presentations. Students will learn to navigate the Windows operating system, use personal information management software, as well as use the Internet for research and manage files in a networked computing environment. Students will also be introduced to the ethics and code of conduct necessary when utilizing technology.

Creativity: An Introduction to Creative Thinking

Learners in this course will have the opportunity to explore divergent thinking, to see possibilities for creative expression in the everyday, and perceive the world in a multi sensory way. Through employing brainstorming, using analogy, and open-ended problem solving, students will build a toolkit of solutions to assist them as they approach artistic problems.

Art History and Criticism

In this course students will learn about the development of art in the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will learn to identify well-known artists throughout history articulating the key stylistic characteristics of major artistic movements. In this course, students will learn to discuss and to evaluate various forms of creative expression using the Feldman method of art criticism. The goal of this course is to provide students with a wide variety of artistic experiences to help move them from the role of observer to one of active engagement in the world of art.

Drawing I: Introduction to Drawing Fundamentals

This course is designed to introduce students to drawing terminology and to improve students' observational drawing skills. Students will learn the technique of sighting and use this technique in a series of drawings. Students will also learn the rules of perspective and apply these rules to drawings done in a variety of settings. Over the length of the course students will document through the keeping of a working portfolio the improvement in their individual drawing skills. Students will be required to keep and regularly update a sketchbook.

Design I

In this course, students will learn about the elements and principles of design. They will become familiar with design terminology and utilize it when discussing professional artists' work. Additionally, students will begin to successfully employ these elements and principles in their own personal work.

Digital Photography

In this course students will learn how to use a digital camera, construct a usable composition, arrange appropriate lighting and print digital images in black and white and in colour. Students will be expected to produce a body of work exploring various themes ie, landscape, nature detail, formal portraiture, wedding, sports, news events, candid photography, animal, still life, product, abstract, figure study, and architecture.

Drawing II: Introduction to the Figure

Building on techniques learned in Drawing I, this course will introduce students to figure drawing. Students will become familiar with the proportions of the figure and the face through continued practice, using gesture drawing and more sustained drawing. Both clothed and nude figures will be employed. Also, students will do an in depth exploration of the proportions of the face culminating in a series of portraits utilizing expressive line and colour. Work in the sketchbook will continue.

Design II: Colour

In this course students will learn basic color theory while gaining the ability to distinguish and utilize variations in colour such as highlight, shadow and reflection. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge by completing a series of projects related to the understanding of the impact of color in our lives.

Introduction to Animation

In this course, students will identify and apply basic techniques and principles of animation. They will use animation terms and tools such as: Keys and extremes, inbetweens, exposure sheets, timing charts, slo-in and slo-out, cycles, arcs, squash and stretch, descending energy, weight, follow through, and secondary action.

Media Exploration

Students will create artworks that use organizational principles and different media to solve specific visual art problems and to help express ideas and feelings. Throughout this course students will express themselves using different types of media such as: collage, paint, print making, and sculpture. This practical course allows students to learn new skills and techniques.

Admission Requirements

Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
Students should submit a portfolio of 5 to 6 pieces of their best art work. This portfolio should include some color work and some observational drawing. Applicants need to also submit a 500 word essay describing their artistic journey so far and what their goals and aspirations are for the future.
Resumé including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program.
