The Admission Process

Applications to Holland College are accepted throughout the year. Applicants applying to more than one program are asked to clearly indicate first and second program choice. The Admissions Office will acknowledge receipt of all applications and will advise the applicant of the documents received in support of the application.

Application Review Date
February 28, 2012

There are specific student selection dates for programs beginning in September, November, January, and March. Priority in acceptance is given to applications received by those selection dates.

  • For programs beginning September, the initial round of selection includes all applications received by February of that same year.
  • For programs beginning in November, January, February or March the initial round of selection includes all applications received by August.
  • For programs with other start dates, please check with Admissions

The date used for selection purposes will be the date of receipt of a completed application by the Admissions Office. For programs with a September start date, applicants will be informed by the Admissions Office in mid-April as to the status of their application. For programs with other start dates, applicants will be informed within four weeks of submitting an application. Completed applications received after the initial student selection date will be considered as seats are available in a program.

The College makes every effort to accept applicants to their preferred programs but may not be able to accommodate every applicant who meets the minimum entrance requirements. When applicants numbers exceed program capacity, applicants are ranked based on specific criteria and selection is made based on the results of the ranking.

If an applicant applies to two programs, the applicant will be kept informed as to his/her status in each of the programs.

If an applicant is not successful in gaining acceptance into his/her program(s) of choice, the applicant may request that his/her application be re-considered for the next year. Applicants may also wish to contact the Admissions Office to investigate alternate programs.

Admission Requirements

Holland College policy requires that the College establish specific prerequisites and selection criteria for each program to ensure that applicants are adequately prepared to be successful in those programs. Therefore the prerequisites for specific programs may vary considerably. The minimum academic prerequisite is a high school diploma or the equivalent.

Other admission requirements for programs could include the following:

  • a satisfactory medical and immunization report
  • references
  • Police Records Check
  • certification/licensing such as First Aid, or Class V driver's licence
  • birth certificate
  • participation in information, orientation or interview sessions
  • participation in aptitude or achievement testing
  • demonstration of English language proficiency

For specific program prerequisites, refer to the program listing. If an applicant does not meet the minimum requirements for a chosen program, the applicant will be notified in writing and, where applicable, referred for academic upgrading. Adult and Community Education offers academic upgrading courses throughout the province at various locations.

Application Documents

The following documents must be submitted with all applications:

  • a completed application form
  • an official high school transcript forwarded directly from high school. (Applicants currently in grade 12 should have their first semester marks forwarded as soon as they are available. Final high school transcripts should be forwarded by the end of the school term.)

Individual programs may require documents in addition to those outlined above. Please see the Programs listing for admission requirements for individual programs.

Completed Applications

In order to be considered for acceptance, the applicant must submit all documents listed above and any other documents requested by a specific program. The completed application must be received by the Admissions Office on or before the specific review date.

Assessment Criteria

The Admissions Office assesses all completed applications and ranks each application using specific selection criteria, in order to identify the most suitable applicants for each program.

The three predominant criteria used in the selection process are:

  • academic achievement (both high school and post-secondary)
  • suitability for the field of study
  • related work experience and/or any other training (please provide copies of certifications)
