Media & Communications Programs

Media and Communications

Print, the digital image and interactive multimedia are just a few of the growth areas in communication today, offering a wide scope of possibilities for the enterprising student.

Interactive Multimedia, Journalism, Photography and Digital Imaging, and Graphic Design encompass the media-focused programs at Holland College. All four diploma programs offer comprehensive curriculum and encourage students to graduate with a portfolio fashioned to their personal goals. In response to student and industry demand, the Interactive Multimedia program is available on a part-time basis with modules being offered at specific dates and times through the year.

As part of the Media and Communications Department at Holland College, students have the opportunity to collaborate with students in the other creative disciplines. While the student initiates many aspects of the learning process, professional instructors guide the outcome based on real world experience.

And our students are award winning!

  • At the 2004 Fujifilm Student Challenge, Photography and Digital Imaging student Mike Needham won the Outstanding Achiever Award and Liam Mogan received a Merit Award; Mogan also had a double page spread of his digital work published in the October 2004 issue of Photolife Magazine;
  • Fujifilm Canada awarded graduating Photography and Digital Imaging student Heather MacDonald $500.00 for her dedication to the study of photography and to her classmates;
  • Graphic Design graduates Jen Ford and Dorothy Hart each had an image published in Photolife magazine's "The Best of Student Special" for September 2004
  • Mark MacLean in Graphic Design won a Silver Medal at the 2005 Skills Canada Competition;
  • Matt Veno was Holland College's 2005 winner of the Atlantic Journalism Award who was chosen for the award by his instructors because of his maturity and professionalism during his time at Holland College; and
  • Canadian and Island Senator Elizabeth Hubley and her office developed a 'request for proposals' for students in the Interactive Multimedia program, inviting students to submit plans for developing her on-line communication. Working individually and in groups, the students put together packages that included a visual design recommendation, a timeline for site construction, and a draft budget. The site recommendation submitted by Lauren McKinney was chosen as the winning proposal.
