Dan Bears, Instructor - Fishing Master IV
Captain Dan Bears has been involved in the marine industry for more than four decades. He began as a fisherman's helper and for the past seventeen years has operated his own tour boat company. Dan has also worked as a teacher in the PEI public school system and at the post-secondary level. Dan has certification in Fishing Master IV/Limited Master and Watchkeeping Mate (Restricted).

Richard Costain, Instructor - Marine Emergency Duties and Fishing Master IV
As a Commercial Inshore and Deep Sea Fishing Master, Richard has worked in numerous capacities on a range of vessels. He also has experience in offshore supply and towing. He holds a Command Endorsement: Master of a Home Trade Steamship of under 350 grosse tonnage.

J. Gary Gallant, Instructor - Marine Emergency Duties
Gary gained twenty years of experience as a firefighter with the Canadian Armed Forces. He holds numerous certifications including Advanced Ships Helicopter and Firefighting, Damage Control and Ships Firefighting, Arson Investigation, and Helicopter Crash Firefighting.

Garth MacKenzie, Instructor - GMDSS and Navigation
For twenty-five years, Garth worked for Marine Atlantic (CN Marine) in numerous capacities, as high as Second Officer. He also served as Second Officer for Contessa Cruise Lines and onboard supply and seismic vessels off Galveston, Texas, and Scotland.

Dennis Mair, Instructor and Consultant - Dynamic Positioning
Captain Dennis Mair, MNI, is President and Operations Manager of C-MAR Services (Canada) Ltd. The C-MAR Group is one of the leading global providers of marine and subsea operational, technical and engineering support services. Captain Mair has held senior positions aboard vessels in Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean, serving as Senior DPO, Chief Officer and Master. He has ten years Command Experience on offshore supply, DP and general cargo vessels, tankers, tugs and self-propelled barges. With 10,000 hours of DP experience (mono-hull and semi-sub), he has been involved in diving, ROV, trenching, laying pipe and cable, drilling and heavy lift operations.

Laura Cormier, Administrative Assistant
Chances are when you call the Marine Training Centre, the person you will speak to is Laura Cormier. She is responsible for communications, correspondence, accounting, course scheduling, registration and all documentation required by students and staff. Laura is a graduate of Holland College's Office Systems Administration program in Summerside.

Kevin Ranahan, Instructor - Navigation, Fishing Master IV, Marine Emergency Duties
Kevin served aboard the Marine Atlantic (CN Marine) ferry vessels in the Prince Edward Island service for over thirty years, including twelve years as Master. He has been conducting MED courses for ten years.

Alan Richards, Instructor - Navigation
A graduate of the University of Prince Edward Island, Alan taught math and science at the high school level before becoming an Instructor at the Holland College Marine Training Centre. While working for the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Alan served as Second and Third Mate on the CSS Baffin, CSS Dawson, and CSS Maxwell. He has also sailed with Atlantic Towing. Alan has a Command Endorsement and a First Mate Intermediate certificate.

Barry MacDonald, Instructor - Dynamic Positioning and Navigation
Captain MacDonald worked with Northumberland Ferries Ltd. (Bay Ferries) for thirty years, most recently as Relieving Master. His current focus is Dynamic Positioning. He did his formal DP training at the DP Training Centre (London) and Lowestoft College (UK). He has logged sea time aboard the Q4000, a self-propelled, semi-submersible oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Barry is a graduate of the University of Prince Edward Island and has taught in the Deck Officer Upgrading Program for the past seven years.

Steve MacFarlane, Master Mariner
A native of Summerside and a graduate of Holland College, Steve began his marine career as a deck hand on an oil tanker. He has since sailed on cargo vessels, chemical carriers and tankers to Europe, Africa, South America and the east coast of North America. During the construction of the Confederation Bridge, which links Prince Edward Island to the New Brunswick mainland, Steve captained a DP vessel for Strait Crossing Inc.
