Marine Training Centre

Welcome

The Holland College Marine Training Centre is located in the city of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, just minutes from the Confederation Bridge. The Centre has been providing Transport Canada-approved training to the marine industry for more than three decades. In addition to the full range of certification from deckhand to master mariner, we offer a number of specialized courses and customized training. We have built our international reputation on quality and flexibility. Holland College-trained mariners are currently crewing vessels of all kinds -- petroleum tankers, passenger ferries, container ships and offshore supply vessels -- throughout the Atlantic region and around the world.

The Marine Training Centre has completed a significant equipment upgrade and program expansion that places Holland College at the forefront of marine training in Canada. Our facility features a Kongsberg (Full Mission) DNV Class "A" ship's bridge simulator with an integrated full-function Dual Redundant Dynamic Positioning (DP) system. In terms of DP training capabilities, our state-of-the-art facility is among the best-equipped in the world. In addition, we have added a PC-based Engine Room Simulator system and a Cargo Handling Simulator. With these facilities and programs, we are able to meet the full range of industry training needs.

Course Offerings

The Marine Training Centre offers the following courses:

Where We Are Located

Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's east coast. One of Canada's four Atlantic provinces, the Island is separated from the mainland of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the Northumberland Strait.

Prince Edward Island is an international tourist destination, welcoming 1.2 million visitors annually. They come to the Island for the pastoral scenery, beautiful beaches, world-renowned golf courses, and to enjoy the culture, food, crafts, and music of the Island. The Island is a great place to live, work and raise a family - a wonderful place to relax and celebrate what we like to call "the Island way of life." It is also the ideal place to go for marine training!

Summerside

The city of Summerside is seventy-one kilometres (44 miles) to the west of Charlottetown, the Island's capital. Summerside has a rich history and offers a range of sporting and cultural events, restaurants and first-class accommodations. The central core of Summerside's residential district is replete with Victorian homes built by prominent citizens of the day. Historical walking tours, mural tours and a waterfront boardwalk complement the area's other attractions.

How to Get Here - We're Closer Than You Think!

Driving

Via the Confederation Bridge
The Confederation Bridge, one of the world's longest continuous multi-span bridges, connects the Island to the mainland. The 12.9 kilometre (8 miles) bridge crosses Northumberland Strait from Borden-Carleton, PEI, to Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, and takes about 10 minutes to traverse. The Bridge, open 24 hours a day, is a very quick, convenient and dramatic way to arrive on or depart from the Island. On the Island side, Borden-Carleton is an easy 20-minute drive from Summerside.

Via The Northumberland Ferries
Depending upon the time of year, the Northumberland Ferries depart from Caribou, Nova Scotia, and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island, on a schedule of about every hour-and-a half and crossings take about 75 minutes. The ferry does not operate from the end of December until early May.

Air

Air Canada Jazz (the regional affiliate of Air Canada) and Westjet offer flights from Toronto and Montreal. Prince Edward Air offers corporate charter air service to and from the Island. Private pilots can take advantage of airports in Charlottetown and Summerside.

Rail

Both VIA Rail and Amtrak (via Montréal) offer services that connect to Moncton, New Brunswick with connecting bus service to many locations on Prince Edward Island.

Accommodations

We are able to offer our students all-inclusive training packages that can be customized to meet specific needs and schedules. The package includes first-class accommodations at the Loyalist Inn located across the street from our scenic waterfront location. The Loyalist is an elegant, four star, traditional country inn offering all the amenities of a luxury urban hotel. Meals are also included, as is transportation to and from the airport. Summerside and the surrounding area offer a broad range of amenities and attractions.
