Search Elite
description
Academic Search Elite,
an EBSCOHOST database, offers users the opportunity to search a broad
(3400+ titles) base of scholarly periodical content on a wide variety
of topics, including science, engineering, technology, medicine, social
sciences, and humanities. Content is somewhat more scholarly than for
some of our other databases.
Each record in the database includes a
bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and
a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is
provided for over 2000 of the indexed publications, although some
titles observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. Coverage
for most titles begins in the mid-1990's. The database is updated daily.
Since Academic Search Elite
is a restricted (by subscription only) database, off-campus users must
hold a
valid library barcode to gain access.

is the online equivalent of the McGraw-Hill
Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, 9th
Edition, and the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of
Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th Edition,
supplemented by research updates and news stories. Users can browse
through categories of subject content or search the 8000+ articles for
desired content. The database also features more than 13,000 high
quality illustrations and a selection of study guides. AccessScience
is updated daily.

Agricola
description
Agricola,
prepared by the National Agriculture Library (NAL) of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, is an index to the international periodical
literature of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal,
plant, and veterinary sciences, entomology, forestry, aquaculture and
fisheries, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental
sciences. Users may search either the NAL catalogue or the index to
journal literature.
Although Agricola records
contain bibliographic data only (i.e., no full text
articles), the database producer increasingly includes links out to
full text versions (where these exist) of the materials indexed.
Agricola coverage
begins in 1979, and the database is updated on a monthly basis. Use of
the database is unrestricted.

Britannica

The web version of the multidisciplinary Encyclopedia
Britannica includes an expanded edition of the
world-famous reference work as well as the Merriam-Webster's
Collegiate Dictionary, 10th ed., the Britannica

to other recommended web sites. Users can browse topics from A-Z or can
conduct keyword searches across all or part of the site. Also featured
are a Biography of the Day and a

link. There are numerous illustrations in all portions of the database.
The database is updated continuously, with at least three major
revisions a year.

index to the worldwide literature of education. Coverage includes

date from 1966 to the present. The ERIC interface
available to Holland College users originates with the database

Reference Center Academic

The Health Reference Center
Academic database, produced by Gale
InfoTrac, provides an integrated collection of over 1000
general interest health and fitness magazines, medical and professional
periodicals, reference books and pamphlets. Designed for
nursing and allied health students, as well as consumer health
researchers, it serves as a slightly more scholarly companion piece to
Health and Wellness Resource Center(known for its emphasis on consumer
health information). This database emphasizes quality control
through careful selection of materials and inclusion of a high
percentage of peer-reviewed titles.
All Health Reference Center Academic
records include a bibliographical citation (author, title, journal
name, etc.) and approximately 75% of the indexed items are also
available in full text format.
Since Health Reference Center Academic
is a restricted (by subscription only) database, off-campus users must
hold a valid library barcode to gain access.
In addition, users should note that access to the Health
Reference Center Academic is limited to
four concurrent sessions at a time; users who encounter a "turnaway

The NCJRS
Abstracts Databases contains summaries of more than 180,000
publications, including U.S. government documents, books, research
reports, journal articles, and unpublished research. A second, full
text database features the complete version of more than 7000
downloadable criminal justice publications. Searchers can enter search
terms directly or can browse through expandable topic lists. Updates to
the Abstracts database are weekly; the publications section is
refreshed whenever a new title is added.

PubMed is
compiled by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is a
bibliographic (citation only) database that indexes the literature of
medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and the health care
system. It covers more than 4800 journals published in the United
States and 70 other countries; most records are from English-language
sources.
All PubMed records include a
bibliographical citation (author, title, journal name, etc.) and
frequently, an abstract or short description. Where online content
exists for the records indexed, whether by subscription only or open
source (free), PubMed
also provides a link out to that content.
Users who wish to take full advantage of PubMed's
features may wish to try the excellent online tutorial
provided by the National Library of Medicine. The best recommended use
of PubMed is as as a
comprehensive scanning tool or broad literature search is required;
those who wish to read full-text on line or who would rather consult
consumer health sources (i.e., less clinical, easier to understand),
may prefer the companion site, MedlinePLUS.

ScienceDirect
Health & Life Sciences Collection
description
ScienceDirect Health &
Life Sciences Collection is compiled by the major
science publisher Elsevier. While the larger ScienceDirect
parent database and the related SCIRUS
website index thousands of Elsevier books and journals, the collection
licensed by Holland College, known as Health & Life Sciences
(college edition), includes the index to all Elsevier titles plus the
full text of over 900 journals in the health and life sciences sub-set.
The subject range is quite far-reaching, including titles such as Biotechnology
Advances, Environmental Pollution, the Journal of
Adolescence, Dental Materials, Tissue and Cell, Trends in Food Science
and Technology, and the Journal for Nature
Conservation, to name but a few.
Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author,
title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of
document content. While indexing in some cases extends back as far as
1965, full-text coverage for the titles included in the Health and Life
Sciences Collection begins five years ago. The database is updated
daily.

SCIRUS
description
SCIRUS is
not a database in the traditional sense, but rather a science-specific,
web-based search engine. You can use SCIRUS
to locate freely-available, scholarly scientific, technical, and
medical information on the web as well as journal content (some of it
free, some of it by subscription). When you search, your results will
be sorted into two categories: web results and journal results, and
these can be sorted by relevancy or date (most recent first).
Although some full text SCIRUS content is freely available, many
articles can only be accessed through subscription services. Users who
wish to pursue by-subscription content found in SCIRUS should contact
library services to see if articles, reports, etc., can be obtained
through other database services or via interlibrary loan.

and to many of the websites and journals indexed by it is unrestricted.
