Use the online databases listed here to find journal or encyclopedia articles on many health-related topics.  Most databases also supply full text articles as part of their online service.  Please note: some of these resources are restricted to Holland College and affiliate users.   Off-campus users require a valid library card with barcode to use these proected resources.

Academic Search Elite: 3400+ journal titles. This scholarly, multidisciplinary database features considerable biomedical content. AccessScience: the online equivalent to the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. Search or browse for content on medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, biology, and a variety of other sci-tech topics. This database is licenced for Holland College use only. Healia: a health-specific search engine; concentrates on high quality health sites and filters results by population, reading level, awards, diagnoses, treatments, risk factors, etc.

Health & Wellness Resource Center: over 700 consumer health/medical journals as well as several well-known reference works (encyclopedias, medical dictionaries, etc.) Also included are links to recommended web sites, pamphlets, guides to prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and complementary (non-traditional or natural) health resources. Health Reference Center Academic: an integrated collection of over 1000 general interest health, fitness magazines, medical and professional periodicals, reference books and pamphlets.  Especially good for nursing and allied health.  For information on off-campus use, please click here.  PubMed: an index to over 4800 of the world's health journals. Although PubMed records contain bibliographic information/abstracts only, the publisher provides some links out to open source and for-fee web locations of full text, where available. ScienceDirect (Health/Life Sciences): includes an index to all Elsevier titles plus the full text of over 900 journals in the health and life sciences. Subjects include bioscience, environmental science, food science and technology, forestry, etc. This database is licenced for Holland College use only. SCIRUS: an index to sci-tech-medical information journals and websites on the web. Some of the sources indexes are for-fee, others are open access. Good for one-stop shopping across a broad spectrum of science content. Online search help.

SocINDEX with Full Text: bibliographic and full text information from the field of sociology, including criminology & criminal justice, demography, ethnic & racial studies, counseling, gender studies, marriage & family, religion, rural & urban sociology, social development, social psychology, social work, substance abuse & other addictions, violence and many other topics.  The database contains full text for 397 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1908, 150 "priority" coverage journals. full text for more than 720 books, and full text for 6,743 conference papers.  For information on off-campus use, please click here. Alzheimer Society of PEI: provincial and national links to services and programs for patients, families, and caregivers.

Caregiving : This content is via WedMD.

Canadian Health Network: online guide to health topics, comparable to MedlinePLUS, but with a Canadian focus.

Health Care Information Resources: links to hundreds of health and wellness sites, compiled by the Health Sciences Library of McMaster University.

HealthyOntario: a wealth of health information for all ages.


Online Reference Materials
AMA Atlas of the Body: short articles and images of all of the major anatomical regions and body systems.

MedlinePLUS: a comprehensive guide to consumer health topics, plus dictionaries and encyclopedias, news stories, interactive tutorials, and much more.

Merck Manual of Medical Information (home ed.): the "consumer" version of the famous Merck Manual.  Conduct word searches or browse by chapter or letter of the alphabet.

Public Health Image Library: searchable image catalogue from the (U.S.) Centers for Disease Control, featuring photographs, illustrations, and multimedia files

Virtual Hospital: health information organized by topic, specialty, body system, or symptom

Occupational Health & Safety
British Columbia Workers' Compensation Board: Occupational Safety for Health Workers : materials to help prevent the most common injuries in health care, including resources on ergonomic injuries, home care, infection control, and hazardous materials.

Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety: CCOHS promotes a safe and healthy working environment by providing information and advice about occupational health and safety.

National (U.S.) Institute of Occupational Health and Safety: Health Care Workers: information on needlestick injuries, back injuries, latex allergy, violence, and stress.

Occupational Hazards in Long Term Care - Nursing Home eTool: This eTool* is designed to assist employers and employees in identifying and controlling the hazards associated with nursing homes and residential care facilities.
