Our library catalogue, Horizon: lists resources all across the College.  Search by keyword or by words in the title, author name, subject, or browse by program name.  Use the barcode on the back of your student card to make online requests.

Article and Encyclopedia Databases
Use the online databases listed here to find journal or encyclopedia articles on many health-related topics.  Most databases also supply full text articles as part of their online service.  Please note: some of these resources are restricted to Holland College and affiliate users.   Off-campus users require a valid library card with barcode to use these proected resources.

Academic Search Elite: an index to over 3400 journals, many of them on health/medical topics, with full text articles from 2000+ journal titles. Scholarly in tone.

Canadian Business and Current Affairs: over 600 Canadian periodical (journal) and news sources, including a variety of medical and consumer health titles.

Gale Health and Wellness Resource Center: full text of various medical and health-related encyclopedias, as well as more than 1200 journals.

 PubMed: an index to over 4800 of the world's health journals. Although PubMed records contain bibliographic information/abstracts only, the publisher provides some links out to open source and for-fee web locations of full text, where available. Professional Development Collection: a specialized journal collection for educators, including some coverage in child development and psychology.

Vocational and Career Collection: 400+ trade, industry, and professional journals, including some nursing titles.

MedlinePLUS: a comprehensive guide to consumer health topics, plus dictionaries and encyclopedias, news stories, interactive tutorials, and much more.

Canadian Health Network: online guide to health topics, comparable to MedlinePLUS, but with a Canadian focus.

Health Care Information Resources: links to hundreds of health and wellness sites, compiled by the Health Sciences Library of McMaster University.

HealthyOntario: a wealth of health information for all ages.


Online Reference Books
AMA Atlas of the Body: short articles and images of all of the major anatomical regions and body systems.

Merck Manual of Medical Information (home ed.): the "consumer" version of the famous Merck Manual.  Conduct word searches or browse by chapter or letter of the alphabet.

AccessScience: Medicine: medical topics from the online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.  Emphasis is on basic definitions.

Online Journals (individual titles)
Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ): the leading health sciences journal in Canada, CMAJ is published every second week and is indexed in a variety of sources, including Medline.

Health Reports: a quarterly journal produced by the Health Statistics Division of Statistics Canada, Health Reports features in-depth research articles on Canadian health topics.  Health Reports is indexed in the online periodical index Medline.

The Lancet: renowned British medical weekly, accessed through the Vocational and Career Collection.

New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM): selected articles from the influential weekly publication.

Nursing: monthly journal, accessed through the Vocational and Career Collection.

Nursing Homes Long Term Care Management: monthly journal, accessed through the Vocational and Career Collection.
