Medical Support Services

Students in the Medical Support Services program may choose a course of study in three profile areas:

  • Medical Secretary
  • Health Unit Coordinator
  • Medical Clerk

Students may enrol either on a full-time or part-time basis. Registering full time students could take up to 16 months to complete, depending on the chosen profile. Individual modules may be designed to allow students and employers to select the skills that best reflect their needs and schedule.

Medical Secretary

This profile prepares learners to work as secretaries for physicians in private offices and clinics, for departments within a health care institution, as transcriptionists for health records, physical medicine and radiology departments as well as for secretarial functions in medically focused government departments and agencies. Learners will gain valuable work experience through supervised on-the-job training in the medical field.

Health Unit Coordinator

This profile prepares learners to work as Health Unit Coordinators (ward clerks, unit secretaries) in hospitals and other health care facilities. This is a dynamic, responsible, multi-tasking position where the individual coordinates the activities and documentation for patients on the ward (unit) with other services and departments in the hospital. Learners will gain valuable work experience through supervised on-the-job training in the medical field.

Medical Clerk

This profile prepares learners to work as clerks/secretaries in medical offices and clinics. This position is responsible for forms completion for medical tests, health services and for billing purposes, telephone, scheduling, and appointments, basic document processing, patient interaction, and customer service. Learners gain valuable work experience through supervised on-the-job training in the medical field.

Admission Requirements for the three profiles

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • An English grammar course and a keyboarding course with over 25 wpm would be an asset
  • Mature students will be considered
  • Resume including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program to which you are applying.
