Propulsion Plant

The Marine Training Centre offers the latest PC-based Engine Room Simulator from Kongsberg Maritime. The STCW95-approved and DNV-certified system is designed for basic operational training of junior engineers, fault studies by senior engineers, and economy and optimizing studies by chief engineers.

The four-station Engine Room lab features 20" TFT monitors for high-fidelity display and user comfort. The Engine Room Simulator is fully integrated with the Centre’s full-mission navigation simulator, which allows for a broader range of realistic training scenarios.

Course Offerings

Propulsion Plant Simulator - Level 1
The Level 1 course is intended for the junior watchkeeping engineer. The course is also suitable as an overview of marine engineering for navigation officers. Emphasis will be on watchstanding procedures associated with main engine and subsystems for both slow and medium speed engines.

Completion of course and Transport Canada examination is required for 3rd and 4th Class Engineer certification.

Course Length: 60 hours

Propulsion Plant Simulator - Level 2
Designed for advanced plant operations and diagnostic training, the Level 2 course provides advanced coverage of condition monitoring and trending. It will demonstrate the effects of degrading equipment conditions, variations in ambients, fuel characteristics and ship sailing conditions on propulsion plant performance and fuel consumption.

Completion of course and Transport Canada examination is required for 1st and 2nd Class Engineers and also for 3rd Class Engineers seeking Chief Engineer certification.

Prerequisite:PPS Level 1
Course Length: 60 hours
