Dynamic Positioning

The Holland College Marine Training Centre holds accreditation from "The Nautical Institute" of London, England for the delivery of Dynamic Positioning training. The DP facilities at the Marine Training Centre are among the finest in the world.

The Centre offers a Kongsberg Polaris (Full Mission), DNV Class “A” compliant ship’s bridge simulator with an integrated full-function, Kongsberg Simrad Dual Redundant Dynamic Positioning (DP) System. DP training facilities include a five-station Basic DP lab. Only one student will be assigned to each work station and every student will have the opportunity to use the integrated DP system on the bridge.

The full DP training package, like all Marine Training Centre courses, can include first-class accommodations, meals and transportation to and from the airport.

DP Induction Course

This five-day course covers all the basic, theoretical and practical knowledge required in the NI training program, phase one. It is aimed at navigators and other users of DP systems with limited or no DP experience, but is also suitable for other persons who would like to have a better basic understanding of the DP system. The training consists of theoretical lessons, as well as practical exercises and demonstrations. Each of the students will have considerable hands-on training on their own DP operator station, using standard SDP software. After the course the student should be ready for phase two in the NI training program, consisting of 30 days of practical experience (not provided by college).

DP Advanced/Simulator Course

After the first practical experience period, this course is the next phase of the NI training program to obtain DP Operator certification. The five-day course will be based on practical simulator exercises with a few theoretical lessons each day. During the exercises the instructor will use an advanced SVS simulator system in creating a range of realistic scenarios, situations and common problems. The goal is to teach the student practical DP operation including planning, procedures, risk assessment and problem solving in different kinds of operations and environmental conditions. After this course the student should be ready for the last phase of the NI training program, the practical experience period.

DP Familiarization Course

This is a three-day introduction to the SDP system, mainly aimed at people not intending to be watchkeeping DP operators. It is appropriate for project engineers, personnel from other departments onboard the DP vessel, management, client representatives and classification societies. The course will provide a basic introduction to the SDP system including explanations of the advantages and limitations of a DP-equipped vessel.
