Law & Security

The Law & Security program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills that lead to employment opportunities in federal and provincial security agencies, as well as private security companies. In addition, this program may enhance qualifications for acceptance into police training program.

Students from this program have secured employment in areas such as retail loss prevention, Customs Canada, hotel security, private security companies, C.N. Police (special constables), university campus police, nuclear plant response forces, young offenders facilities, military police, municipal/provincial compliance enforcement officers, airport security, sheriff departments and casino security officers.

The Law & Security program is officially endorsed by the Canadian Society for Industrial Security Inc.

Areas of Competency

Respond to legal issues

  • Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canada Evidence Act, Controlled Drugs and Substance Abuse Act, Provincial Statutes including Property and Trespass Legislation, Municipal By-Law application and interpretation in relation to corporate policy and regulations, as well as Ethics for Justice Professionals.

Respond to protection and security issues

  • Patrol officer duties and responsibilities in static and mobile patrol techniques, crime scene protection and the continuity of evidence leading to and including court proceedings
  • Security investigation and surveillance techniques in confidential investigations
  • Work place accident investigations within federal and provincial occupational health and safety legislative guidelines
  • Residential and commercial asset protection
  • Crime prevention programs for the protection of people, property, information and liability

  • Responding to emergency and crisis situations with application of appropriate interpersonal techniques to defuse critical situations

Graduate Opportunities

  • Regulatory Enforcement: Private Policing, Protection, Safety and Security Officers, as well as private security companies. In addition, this program may enhance qualifications for acceptance into police training programs.

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by program start date
  • A Police Records Check with no findings of guilt (CPIC) for Bondability
  • Completion of a Holland College medical form
  • Valid drivers license. Having a restricted or graduated license during the program or after graduation, regardless of the training the student has received, does not permit them from driving on any provincial highway unless they abide by the conditions of their restricted or graduated license
  • Three completed reference forms
  • Resume including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program to which you are applying
  • Interview and assessment may be required

There is a screening procedure through local and/or national police agencies.
