The Surveyor is published  by the Journalism students of Holland College, P.E.I. and printed at the Guardian, a daily newspaper in the provincial capital, Charlottetown.

Journalism

The newspaper business and a growing number of related fields place a premium on clear, concise, accurate writing. The Journalism program emphasizes this skill and other fundamentals while recognizing the importance of new technology.

Learners use state of-the-art computers and software to lay out and paginate their work into a credible newspaper. They are also introduced to the rudiments of newspaper news and feature photography. Using readily available community resources, they learn the craft of news gathering, from interviewing to covering meetings and demonstrations. Journalism students participate in two on-the-job placements and should budget for this expense. The first-year placement lasts four weeks and the second placement lasts six weeks. Sites may be located off-Island resulting in possible additional travel and/or accommodation costs. In addition to on-the-job training, students produce their own weekly newspaper, The Surveyor, published 9 times per year. The Surveyor can be seen online here. They also produce a daily newspaper, Front Page News, for several weeks each year.

Graduates of this program will be fully equipped to handle entry-level reporting positions in daily or weekly newspapers, be adaptable to the changing demands of the workplace and be skilled self teachers, capable of learning from their mistakes and deepening their skills with minimal supervision or feedback.

Graduate Opportunities

Most graduates work for daily or weekly newspapers. The desktop publishing industry and the Internet are rapidly creating an entirely new range of possibilities for graduates interested in reaching targeted, special interest readerships. Other learners use this training to advance to further education, one opportunity being a joint, four-year program with the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). Graduates of the four-year program receive a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Print Journalism from UPEI, plus their diploma in newspaper reporting from Holland College. Students can take the diploma, then go to UPEI for two more years to get their degree. Or they can go to UPEI for their first year, then take the two-year program at Holland College, then return to UPEI for one more year. They must spend their final term at UPEI. Some learners use the training as a solid grounding for careers in broadcast journalism. Opportunities also exist in related fields, such as public relations and information services.
