Environmental Applied Science Technology

The Environmental Applied Science Technology Program educates and trains Environmental Technicians to have the skills and knowledge required for the performance of employment activities that seek to manage the use of, impact on, and enhance the sustainability of the environment. These activities may include environmental monitoring, or the use of sampling and analysis techniques in any of the following sectors:

  • Environmental protection
  • Conservation and preservation of natural resources
  • Environmental sustainability

The program curriculum focuses on multi-disciplinary competencies that are specific to environmental work. The following details the nature of training components provided by the Environmental Applied Science Technology Program:

Environmental Protection

  • Water quality (including investigation, monitoring, analyses of surface waters, groundwater, drinking water, and wastewater discharges)
  • Land quality (including issues related to contaminated site investigations and remediation)
  • Environmental Assessment
  • Air quality (including ambient air quality monitoring and pollution control technologies; industrial air monitoring, occupational/industrial hygiene monitoring, and indoor air quality)
  • Solid and hazardous waste management (including waste treatment and disposal methods, operation and management of recycling programs)
  • Human and environmental health and safety

Conservation and Protection

  • Aquatic systems (performing fish kill investigations; biological sampling techniques)
  • Agricultural systems (soil erosion and control techniques)
  • Energy (including Renewable Energy Technologies such as wind energy, as well as biomass, solar and geothermal technologies; principles of energy conservation and energy efficiency)

Environmental Sustainability

  • Regulatory mechanisms for environmental protection, including both federal and provincial remedies
  • Environmental management systems (principles of total quality management systems, ISO 9000 and 14000, quality assurance and quality control, statistical methods used in laboratory and field activities)

Graduates will possess the technical skills and knowledge required to:

  • Design, plan and conduct field surveys and assessments of air, surface water, groundwater, soils, and sediments
  • Understand the operation of water and wastewater treatment systems
  • Use a variety of field and laboratory equipment
  • Recognize workplace hazards and employ hazard reducation techniques
  • Prepare and present technical reports of data collected
  • Understand the operation and maintenance of pollution control systems
  • Apply environmental statutes and regulations

Intake in this program is every second year (the next program commencement will be September, 2007).
