ESL Day Program- English as a Second Language

This program is divided into three levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. All students are assessed upon commencement of the program to determine the correct level of placement for them. The curriculum involves 10% Grammar, 20% Listening, 50% Conversation, 10% Writing and 10% Reading. Students who complete the advanced level would be capable of functioning in a College or University program. The program is designed to permit plenty of ESL activity both inside and outside the classroom environment. The program is offering 4 sessions, each session is 12 weeks in duration. There are four (4) twelve week sessions:

  • September 2, 2008 - November 25, 2008
  • November 26, 2008 - February 26, 2009
  • February 27, 2009 - June 2, 2009
  • June 3, 2009 - August 28, 2009

Fee & Refund Information for English as a Second Language (ESL) program for International Students

  1. A $100 Canadian (CAD), non-refundable, application fee will be charged for all international student applications to the ESL program. The application fee is waived for additional ESL sessions taken in the same year.
  2. When international applicants are accepted to a program they must forward, within 60 days from the date of acceptance letter, a confirmation fee of $500.00 (CAD) in order to confirm their attendance and hold their seat. The confirmation fee will be applied toward the tuition fee. No refund of the confirmation fee will be granted on or after registration day.
  3. Not withstanding the above paragraph, International students who are unable to obtain a Study Permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will have 50% of their confirmation fee refunded if they provide Holland College a copy of the letter of refusal from CIC.
  4. The tuition for each ESL session will be $2700. The balance of tuition is payable in full on the day of registration.
  5. Students who exit the ESL program within two weeks from the course commencement will be granted a refund less a $500.00 administrative fee. No refunds will be granted after the second week of enrollment. A refund may be granted if the student exits for medical reasons and supplies a medical certificate.

ESL Night- English as a Second Language

With an emphasis on conversational English, this program offers participants the chance to learn and improve their proficiency in speaking English. Participants practice oral communication at a variety of levels, participate in computer-based language training and acquire basic English skills in small groups and/or individualized learning. Various teaching approaches are used: communicative, thematic and functional. Classes also provide structured grammar lessons.

Eligibility / Costs

  • For participants who are Canadian Citizens or have a Permanent Resident Card- this program is free of charge and is funded by the PEI Department of Education.
  • For participants who possess visas from other countries and who are presently residing in Canada (student visa/visitor visa) - the cost of this program is $195 per 10 week term.

  • First term - October until December, 2 nights a week, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
  • Second term - January until May, 2 nights a week, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
