Correctional Officer

The Correctional Officer program instills the knowledge and skills needed for a career in federal and provincial correctional services. Since the skills are transferable to other areas of criminal justice, graduates frequently find work in related fields.

Areas of Competency

  • Develop personal competencies of physical and mental alertness, motivation of self and others, stress management, understanding human behaviour and interacting with others
  • Evaluate and influence behaviour including the identification and evaluation of deceptive and manipulative behaviour, conflict and assaultive behaviour
  • Communicate effectively using a variety of techniques and different mediums of expression in a wide variety of settings
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment by the use of security practices, verbal interventions, control tactics and the use of various types of security equipment and safe handling and use of weapons

  • Interview strategies and techniques to assess offender and inmate needs, assess problems, learn about potential problems and issues and investigate incidents
  • Practice techniques which prevent emergency situations from occurring

  • Respond to emergency situations such as inmate assaults, medical situations, self-mutilating behaviours, fire-setting behaviour, threats and intimidation and hostage taking situations
  • Undertake a full driving program
  • Develop behaviours, skills and techniques to support institutional staff responses to major emergency situations such as riots and disturbances, hostage takings, large fires or where disasters create operational difficulties or make evacuation necessary
  • Understand contingency planning, managing crisis situations, emergency response and hostage negotiations through a crisis management process and scenario training
  • Understand the long-term impact of stress on staff and inmates and the means available to facilitate coping
  • Identify, select and operate tools and equipment for normal institutional operations
  • Familiarization with the case management and offender program process
  • Examine the role of an entry level Corrections Officer in the case management process and in program participation feedback
  • Develop an understanding of the intelligence process in a correctional setting. Prepare intelligence reports based on scenario participation, understand the process of developing sources of information, handling informants, and evaluating information reliability

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • Must be 19 years of age or older by December 31 of the year for which you are applying
  • A Police Records Check with no findings of guilt (CPIC)
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship (birth certificate) or Landed Immigrant Status (documentation from Immigration Canada)
  • Valid drivers license. Having a restricted or graduated license during the program or after graduation, regardless of the training the student has received, does not permit a graduate to drive on any provincial highway unless they abide by the conditions of their restricted or graduated license
  • Completion of Holland College medical form
  • Three completed reference forms
  • Interview and assessment may be required
  • Resume including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program to which you are applying.

Program Management and Review

The Correctional Officer program is reviewed by monitoring federal and provincial corrections across the country on an on-going basis. Program reviews are periodically undertaken by representatives from corrections agencies mainly in Atlantic Canada in order to provide timely, comprehensive input and to keep the program up-to-date, therefore, better meeting the needs of corrections practitioners.
