Network Administrator Specialist (NAS)

Foundations of Networking (CIS4410)

Pre-requisites: CIS1301 and CIS1306

Novell Certified Course

Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to implement NetWare and utilize its management tools and will focus on seven key learning areas: installing and using, managing eDirectory, managing printing, managing storage space, managing e-mail/instant messaging services, implementing internet services, and managing security. These skills will apply to networks in a wide range of business environments including professional offices, small businesses, workgroups, departments, and corporate information services.

Advanced Network Management (CIS4420)

Pre-requisite: CIS4410

Novell Certified Course

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills to perform the network management tasks that are most common yet critical to administrators of LANs and WANs. Emphasis will be placed on the network management utilities of NetWare. Skills included are: monitor, restore, and optimize server health and network traffic; manage and restore eDirectory; manage clients throughout the network; access online technical resources to troubleshoot network problems; establish an internal and external certificate authority; determine server and user licensing needs; establish storage solutions perform server backups; and restore the file system.

Directory Services Design (CIS4440)

Pre-requisites: CIS4420

Novell Certified Course

Students will learn to design and implement eDirectory trees and related components in any type of organization. A real-world scenario will be used where students design and implement a new tree to meet the internal needs of an organization. Each student will be responsible for his or her own organization. After the students’ trees are designed and implemented, they will learn to merge their tree with the tree of a new company. Various design scenarios will be explored based on the goals of the organization.

E-Mail Management (CIS4450)

Pre-requistes: CIS4410

Novell Certified Course

Designed for system administrators to learn how to effectively implement and administer GroupWise- an e-mail environment. This course is hands-on focused and takes students through the process of implementing and administering a basic system to a more complex system, incorporating GWIA and Web-Access. Topics include: GroupWise installation and configuration, administration tasks, maintenance, and optimization, expanding GroupWise systems, WebAccess installation and configuration and troubleshooting.

Cisco Networking Academy

The Cisco Networking Academy program consists of four courses that prepare the student for the CCNA certification. The first two courses are offered in the program. The program is designed to teach students how to design, build, and maintain the infrastructure of a small to medium-size network.

Course One (CIS4480)
Pre-requisites: CIS1301 and CIS1306
Students will learn to identify and describe the functions of each of the seven layers of the OSI reference model; describe data link and network addresses and identify key differences between them; define and describe the function of a MAC address; list the key internet working functions of the OSI Network Layer; identify at least three reasons why the industry uses a layered model; describe the different classes of IP addresses and subletting; and identify the functions of the TCP/IP network-layer protocol.

Course Two (CIS4490)
Pre-requisites: CIS4480
Students will examine router elements (RAM, ROM, CDP); describe connection-oriented network service and connectionless network service; define flow control and describe the 3 basic methods used in networking; identify the functions of the TCP/IP transport-layer protocols; control router passwords, identification and banner; check an initial configuration using the setup command; configure and verify IP addresses.

Linux Administration (CIS4470)

Pre-requisites: CIS1301 and CIS1306
The Linux operating system is fast becoming the choice of many organizations for their computing needs. Whether Linux will be used as a desktop or networked server operating system this course will provide students with the required skills to effectively manage the OS. Topics included are; installation, shell and text files, basic administration, redundancy and fault tolerance, managing resources, creating scripts, printing and backups.

Network Security Fundamentals (CIS4460)

Pre-requisites: CIS1352, CIS4410 and CIS4470
Provides the broad-based knowledge necessary to prepare students for further study in specialized security fields. Included are sections on authentication, attacks, malicious code, remote access, e-mail, web security, directory and file transfer services, firewalls, routers and switches, network security topologies, intrusion detection security baselines, cryptography, disaster recovery and computer forensics.

Active Directory Infrastructure (CIS4441)

Pre-requisites: CIS1352
This hands-on course is designed to prepare you for the challenges you will face as a Microsoft networking professional. Specific topic include: Introduction to Active Directory; name resolution and DNS, design philosophy; architecture, logical design; physical design, replication, operations masters, authentication and security; managing users, groups, and resources; group policy for corporate policy, deploying and managing software with group policies, Disaster Recovery.
