Computer Information Systems - Core

Introduction to Information Technology (CIS1100)

This introductory course combines communication skills with technical skills in a format that will be built upon as the program progresses. Areas of study include: basic information technology (IT) foundational skills, an introduction to computer concepts and application software.

Business Communications (CIS1150)

This course will develop and assist students in becoming more proficient in their abilities to communicate through their written and oral communication. Areas covered in this course are: 1. Researching, compiling, and presenting information in report form, 2. Writing business correspondence, 3. Maintaining a customer service journal, 4. Participating in business meetings, 5. Verbal & non-verbal communication skills, 6. Presenting Individual and Group Presentation, and 7. Listening Skills.

Web Application and Scripting Concepts Using JavaScript (CIS1280)

Introduces students to Internet programming through the use of scripting languages as well as learning to create, publish, and maintain interactive web pages. Students are introduced to a variety of design tools and techniques while learning to document program specifications, create flowcharts, and design screen and report layouts.

Database Management (CIS1246)

This course provides students with a broad understanding of databases and how to use structured query language (SQL). The primary focus will be the relational model with a brief introduction to object relational. Topics covered will be database history, relational operations, database design, normalization, and implementation. To meet these objectives, this course will present a blend of traditional and current development technologies.

A+ Hardware Support (CIS1301)

Students take an in depth look at some advanced computer maintenance concepts and techniques. We will examine theoretical concepts that make the world of technology unique. Along with examining different troubleshooting strategies, this course will explore the advancement of technological development, as well as, timeless problem solving strategies.

A+ Software Support (CIS1306)

Examines common PC operating systems (OS’s) in use today. Students acquire the skills to install, configure, upgrade, and troubleshoot DOS, Window 95x, NT, 2000, and XP desktop operating systems. Students will be introduced to alternate OS’s such as Unix, Linux, OS/2, and Mac OS.

Windows Server 2003 Server (CIS1352)

Pre-requisites: CIS1301 and CIS1306
Introduces students to managing and maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. The course will focus on account and resource management in a Windows Server 2003 environment, covering topics such as managing physical and logical devices; users, computers, and groups; access and permissions; the server environment; and disaster recovery services.

Business Fundamentals (CIS1170)

This course will explore technologies and business processes in business activities and how to employ them most efficiently. Students will also gain a solid understanding of different departments within an organization, such as finance, marketing and human resources and how a business operates, using organizational structures and business ethics.

Structured Programming Using C++ (CIS2211)

Students begin programming using the C++ language, analyzing case problems, planning algorithms, and learning how to translate their planning documents (algorithms) into a working program. They learn how to correct syntax errors, identify logic errors, develop programs and learn testing and debugging skills. An emphasis is also placed on preparing internal documentation.

Systems Analysis (CIS1235)

Introduces the fundamentals of business systems analysis. Students learn to investigate, analyze, evaluate and document user requirements of a business information system using industry investigation techniques, process modeling techniques, and cost/benefit analysis. Students also develop strong verbal and written communication skills, project management skills and the ability to work effectively in teams.

Principles of Information Security (CIS1290)

Pre-requisite: CIS1100
Examination of current standards of due care and best business practices in Information Security. Includes examination of security technologies, methodologies and practices. Focus is on evaluation and selection of optimal security posture. Topics include evaluation of security models, risk assessment, threat analysis, organizational technology evaluation, security implementation, disaster recovery planning and security policy formulation and implementation.

Accounting Fundamentals (CIS1175)

This course focuses on financial accounting, preparation of financial statements, selected balance sheet items and financial statement analysis, as applied in various business organizations. This course will assist the organization manager with decision making.
