Business Administration

The Business Administration program trains learners for entry positions in business management or for operation of their own independent businesses. The opportunity to acquire a broad knowledge of business skills will prepare the graduates for advancement to increased level of management responsibilities in many types of organizations.

Students may enroll either on a full-time or part-time basis. Individual modules may be designed to allow students and employers to select the skills that best reflect their needs and schedule. For those considering part-time studies, please contact a program instructor.

All students entering the Business Administration Program will begin study under the Business Manager Profile. At the end of the first year of study, after consultation with Program faculty, the student may elect to continue in the Business Manager Profile, or switch to the Sales Manager Profile.

The program offers real world experiences- on-the-job training, field trips, hands-on projects, industry speakers- combined with creative and innovative teaching methods to ensure learners gain a deep- rooted knowledge of today's business world.

The Business Manager profile emphasizes the development of a broad range of skills to prepare learners for advancement into management positions.

Areas of Competency

Accounting Systems
Includes skills required to perform the accounting processes in a business enterprise. Subject matter includes, but is not limited to the following: The Accounting Cycle, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, The Bookkeeping Function, Journalizing and Posting Transactions to the Accounting System, Reconciling Accounts, Preparing Financial Statements, and Computerized Accounting.

Advertising
Provides an overview of policies and procedures used in planning and preparing advertisements, evaluation and selection of media, planning and coordinating advertising, promotional objectives, and creative strategy.

Business Law
Provides an introduction to the Canadian legal system, tort law and professional liability, with an exploration of the principles of contract law, the law governing specific kinds of commercial contracts as well as negotiable instruments and credit and business organizations.

Communication
Assists in the development of oral, written, and non-verbal communication skills required to be successful in today's business environment.

Computer Technology
Provides foundation skills in the areas of keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet applications, data collection and analysis, Web based research, and e-commerce to provide skills essential in today's business world.

Economics
Provides foundation skills on the forces of supply and demand, competition and economic indicators.

Facilities Management
Examines the systems related to quality facility management. Utilizes industry tours, community guest speakers and projects.

Financial
Includes all skills required for successful Financial Management of a business enterprise. Subject matter includes, but is not limited to the following: Banking Practices, Sources and Uses of Business Financing, Financial Statement Preparation and Analysis, Cash Flow Management, Business Planning, Lease Versus Buy Processing, and Tax Planning.

Government Regulations
Provides an overview of the Provincial Revenue Tax legislation, GST and HST legislation, Employment Act, and Workers' Compensation.

Human Resource Management
Addresses a broad range of skills including planning, recruitment and selection, training and development, motivation and productivity, compensation, health and safety, psychological, social and economic needs of employees, and employment laws.

Inventory Management
Provides an overview on how extremely important inventory control is for every business. Emphasis on just-in-time delivery, distribution, shipping and receiving, shrinkage, selecting suppliers, and purchasing planning.

Marketing
Explores the inter-relationship of product, price, place, promotion and customer loyalty. Develops the skills necessary to identify customer segments, determine needs and to create products and services with value.

Organize Work Environment
Provides an overview and practice for the organization, management and maintenance of work procedures within the business office environment.

Purchasing
Focuses on purchasing and its impact on forecasting in forward buying.

Sales Manager

The Sales Manager profile prepares graduates to enter the sales field and offers the background for advancement into sales management.

Graduates of the Business Administration two-year diploma program are eligible to receive 60 credits toward the 120 credit Bachelor of Professional Arts (Communications Studies) degree program offered by Athabasca University.

Certificate in Small Business Management

The Certificate in Small Business Management program prepares students to enter into entry level management positions within a private business or within their own small business. Further, students will acquire a broad knowledge of business skills will prepare gradutes for advancement to increased level of management responsiblities.

The Certificate in Small Business Management will provide graduates a solid foundation of undertstanding of business operations.

Graduate Opportunities for the Certificate in Small Business Management Program

Graduates can with confidence enter into a business climate and function at a basic level. They will have acquired an introductory level of knowledge and skills in all key and functional small business areas that are scalable across most organizations.

 

 

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • Resume including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program to which you are applying.
