Basic Firefighting

The Atlantic Police Academy’s Basic Firefighting Program will train to the levels of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001, as per Firefighter Professional Qualifications. This program obtained it's accreditation in April 2006 from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), which is recognized throughout North America. View our Firefighting Video.

With the qualifications received from this course, graduates will be able to apply for jobs anywhere in Canada or the United States as a professional (paid), full time firefighter.

April 2008 (Slemon Park, PEI)
September 2008 (Slemon Park, PEI)

Length: 22 weeks including 4 weeks of practical and applied skills training with 8 weeks of required on-the-job training.
Training Locations: The Atlantic Police Academy in Slemon Park, PEI and the PEI Firefighter Training Centre at Milton, PEI for the practical skills training.

Credentials Issued upon Successful Program Completion:

Holland College Certificate in Basic Firefighting – Level I & II;

Graduates will be able to apply for jobs anywhere in Canada or the United States as a professional (paid), full time firefighter.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • Minimum age 18
  • Valid class 5 driver's license
  • Visual Exam
  • A Police Records Check with no findings of guilt (CPIC)
  • Students will be required to pass a *Physical Fitness Test set out by the Course Standard which will be conducted at the Atlantic Police Academy prior to course start date. *The C.P.A.T. (candidate physical ability test) will be accepted if current at time of course commencement.
  • Due to the strenuous training demands, the student must be in excellent physical condition as determined by a thorough medical examination and be able to participate in extremely strenuous physical activity in hostile environments without restrictions
