Apprenticeship Training

The Apprenticeship Branch of the PEI Department of Education sponsors training programs in many trade areas such as: Automotive Service Technician, Electrician, Machinist, Cook, Plumber and others. These apprenticeship programs are a combination of on-the-job and in-school technical training and lead to interprovincial certification under the national Red Seal program.

On Prince Edward Island the technical training is provided by Holland College at the Aerospace Centre, The Culinary Institute of Canada or the Georgetown Centre, depending on the trade.

The block release programs are five to eight weeks in length and there are no tuition fees. Because they are full-time employees, apprentices 'earn while they learn' and are also allowed to draw EI benefits during the in-school training period. A travel allowance is also available for apprentices who must travel long distances to attend training.

Apprentices who complete the program will be eligible to challenge for the Interprovincial Red Seal which is recognized across Canada.

Apprenticeship Training

Apprenticeship training, which leads to certification, begins after the pre-apprentice program is completed and the student is working full-time with a suitable employer. All those wishing to enter the apprenticeship program must apply even if they have completed the pre-apprenticeship program. An on-line application is available at www.apprenticeship.pe.ca
