Adult Ed Student Handbook 2007-2008

Adult Education

A variety of opportunities are available for adults to improve their reading, writing and math skills, to upgrade their academic level and to prepare for entry to post-secondary or skill training programs. Programs are individualized, allowing learners to progress at their own pace and to learn in a supportive and non-threatening environment. Learners can attend during the day or evening on a full-time or part-time basis. The program allows for continuous intake and exit.

The following programs are available:

Literacy/Numeracy Training
This program is for learners who wish to improve their reading, writing and math skills.

Level 1 and Level 2
These levels help learners gain or review the reading, writing and math skills necessary to take the GED preparation course or to enroll in high school courses.

Preparation for the GED Exam
The GED exam gives adults who have not graduated from high school the opportunity to earn a high-school equivalency diploma. The GED preparatory class assists learners in preparing for the GED exam by providing a general review of basic academic skills and the opportunity to take practice tests. Subjects covered include: writing, social studies, science, literature and mathematics.

Level 3/High School Credits
Learners can acquire high school credits or upgrade existing marks to meet the admission requirements of post-secondary institutions or to complete requirements for the PEI High School Diploma for Mature Students.

Prerequisite

18 years of age and out of the regular school system for one year.

Cost

There is no cost to students. Funding is provided by Canada/PEI Labour Market Development Agreement; PEI Department of Education, PEI Department of Health and Social Services and the PEI Department of Development
