Accounting Technology

The Accounting Technology program is designed to provide learners with a thorough working knowledge of fundamental accounting procedures. Upon program completion, learners will have developed the skills necessary to maintain manual or computerized accounting records for a business.

Program graduates who have acceptable standing from courses in the areas of Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Business Law, Economics and Computers may be granted credit exemptions in these areas by the CGA (Certified General Accountants Association) or other universities and colleges.

Graduates interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and who meet the University's admission requirements, will be credited with one year toward a degree program.

Students may enrol either on a full-time or part-time basis. Individual modules may be designed to allow students and employers to select the skills that best reflect their needs and schedule. For those considering part-time studies, please contact a program instructor.

Students in the Accounting Technology program will choose a course of study in either of two profiles: Accounting Technician or Bookkeeper.

Accounting Technician

The Accounting Technician profile provides learners with a thorough working knowledge of fundamental accounting procedures using current software programs including Simply Accounting for Windows, ACCPAC, Excel, Quick Books, Word and Caseware, as well as current tax programs. Learners acquire the skills to prepare financial statements and analyze the results.

Learners will be required to complete up to 8 weeks of on-the-job training in the second year of their program.

The course content for the Accounting Technician Profile is reflected in the following areas of competency.

Areas of Competency

Accounting Systems
Includes skills required to perform the accounting processes in a business enterprise. Subject matter includes, but is not limited to the following: The Accounting Cycle, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, The Bookkeeping Function, Journalizing and Posting Transactions to the Accounting System, Reconciling Accounts, Preparing Financial Statements, Computerized Accounting, Inventories, Long-term Investments and Liabilities, Partnerships and Corporations, and Analysis of Financial Statements.

Business Law
Provides an introduction to the Canadian legal system, tort law and professional liability, with an exploration of the principles of contract law, the law governing specific kinds of commercial contracts as well as negotiable instruments and credit and business organizations.

Business Math
Review of metric and imperial units, present and future value concepts, error detection techniques, and introduction to statistical techniques.

Communication
Assists in the development of oral, written, and non-verbal communication skills required to be successful in today's business environment.

Computer Technology
Provides foundation skills in the areas of keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet applications, data collection and analysis, Web based research, and e-commerce to provide skills essential in today's business world.

Economics
Provides foundation skills on the forces of supply and demand, competition, and the economic indicators.

Human Resource Management
Addresses a range of skills including training and development of employees and employment laws.

Management Accounting
Includes skills required to record basic cost accounting transactions and budget preparation. Other areas covered are cost/volume/profit relationships and variance analysis.

Taxation
Provides an overview of the Provincial Revenue Tax Legislation, GST and HST Legislation, Workers' Compensation, preparation of T4's, and personal and corporate tax returns.

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level
  • Resume including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about yourself relevant to the program to which you are applying.

The most suitable candidates for this area of study will be chosen on the basis of the above requirements.

Bookkeeper

The Bookkeeper profile provides learners with the skills necessary to work in today's sophisticated accounting environments. The emphasis is on performing the skills and not on analysis of operating results and managerial accounting functions.

The learner should be able to work in any part of an accounting department such as accounts payable or accounts receivable.

Learners will be required to complete up to 6 weeks of on-the-job training.
