Hurricanes Women's Golf: Hurricanes preparing for fall events

Hurricanes accept their silver medals at the 2012 Ping CCAA championships in Oshawa, Ontario

Over the next five months the members of the Hurricanes women's golf team will be hard at work preparing themselves for their biggest tournament of the year, the Ping CCAA national championships in Quebec City at the Royal Quebec Golf Club.

The tournament draws the best CCAA schools from across Canada to the three-day event annually. The tournament will take place October 15th to 18th.

The Holland Hurricanes are coming off their best finish in team history in last year's event. The trio of Tariqah Walikraam, Kaitlyn Dawson and Bobbi Wilson lit up the Oshawa Golf Club over the three days with superb golf being played. In the end the team lost out on Holland College's first ever national gold medal by a single shot. This was the Hurricanes second silver medal in women's golf; the other took place in 2007 in Castlegar, B.C.

The team is using last year's performance as positive motivation that they can compete with the best schools in the country.

Walikraam is the lone returning player to the team this year, but solid recruiting has brought in new player Jaylene Holmes-Tang. Holmes-Tang, from Ontario, will be entering the Golf Club Management program.

Holmes-Tang had this to say on her upcoming enrollment at Holland College.

"Heading into my first year I'm excited to be starting a new chapter in my life bringing along with me, my love of the game of golf. I had previously visited P.E.I. on a family road trip and fell in love with the small province and towns. I have chosen to stay with this sport from the others I've played because it can be a lifelong game and I can measure my own success. I look forward to my move here in the fall from home in Ontario, and meeting new people and friends!"

Walikraam, who finished in a tie for seventh in last year's CCAA event, is eager to get back on the course.

"My goal is to bring my scores down and become an all-around more consistent golfer. Reflecting back on this past year I am pleased with the successes, but also realize there is room for improvement next season. This fall I look forward to more intense training leading up to the ACCA and Ping CCAA championships."

The Hurricanes coaching and recruiting staff will continue to work on bringing new players to Holland College over the summer months to put the best team possible on the course come the fall events.

Holland College will once again be hosting this year's ACAA championships at the Rodd Crowbush Resort in October.

The women Hurricanes have won the ACAA championships in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
