Roche named CCAA athletic director of the year

Athletics and Recreation Director, Albert Roche
A strong season for the Holland Hurricanes athletics program has culminated in their director receiving national recognition.
Albert Roche, athletics and recreation director at Holland College, was named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) athletic director of the year at their annual general meeting in Montreal on Thursday night.
The award is given annually to an athletic director who makes significant contributions to their college or community.
Roche is a game changer, said Sandra Murray-MacDonell, executive director of the CCAA.
"He pushes the limits to develop, improve and excel in all the roles and capacities he champions. All organizations need individuals like Albert to bring energy and dedication to the table."
Roche has been with the Holland College athletics department since the Hurricanes were born in 2004, working hard to further promote Holland College athletics and maximize the student-athlete experience.
During the 2012-13 season, he served as the national golf convenor for the CCAA national golf championships in Oshawa, Ont., as well as host chair for the CCAA women's soccer championships held in November in Cornwall.
Since joining the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) in 2006, Roche's commitment to student-athletes has helped the program grow into a perennial contender on the field and in the classroom.
On the field, the Hurricanes enjoyed another successful season, winning national silver medals in women's golf and men's basketball while collecting five ACAA conference medals.
On an individual level, the Hurricanes had three CCAA athletes of the week, three athletes of the month, three team all-stars, five CCAA All-Canadians, three CCAA Academic All Canadians, and the men's soccer coach of the year.
At the ACAA conference level, the Hurricanes had 18 team all-stars, seven golf all-stars, the men's basketball rookie of the year, and the men's and women's soccer coaches of the year.
However, Roche's contributions extend far beyond the field.
Roche demonstrated his commitment to the Hurricanes program with his presence at almost every game, tournament, recruitment camp and fundraising event.
In the classroom, he played a key role in establishing the Hurricane Scholar Athlete Awards, which are given to any student-athlete with a minimum average of 80 per cent during a full year of studies.
The ACAA is proud of Holland College's achievements and Roche's dedication in helping the conference increase its profile, said Neil Hooper, president of the ACAA.
"Albert has a rare sense of what it takes to build champions and a professional atmosphere, which is founded on successful teams and quality hosting at both the regional and national level."

Hurricanes to host ACAA Soccer Championships

Hurricanes player Laura Younker with the 2013 ACAA Soccer Championships logo at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall.
Charlottetown, PE - The Holland Hurricanes will welcome some of the best male and female soccer players in the region to Prince Edward Island for the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Soccer Championships in October, 2013. Holland College was selected to host the championship at the highly rated Terry Fox Sports Complex located in Cornwall, PE. The college is making plans for a quality tournament that will display players competing for an ACAA championship in both men's and women's soccer.
The championships will be held October 25th to 27th, featuring two days of competitive matches. Eight teams from across Atlantic Canada will do battle in what promises to be a hotly contested fight for ACAA crowns in varsity men's and women's soccer. The tournament will bring collegiate representation from the top four finishing schools in the ACAA standings to the Island in a championship that grows more competitive every year. The Holland Hurricanes won ACAA men's gold in 2009, 2011 and 2012 while the women have won the tournament twice, in 2008 and 2010.
"This championship tournament provides a tremendous opportunity to exhibit the best of our Island hospitality, our varsity soccer programs, and the college's academic offerings. Our Hurricanes teams continue to build a reputation for competing at the national level and I have every confidence in the 'Canes as they strive to win on home turf this year," said Albert Roche, Manager of Athletics & Student Activities at Holland College.
Cornwall's Terry Fox Complex is an exceptional facility and is the proud home of the Holland Hurricanes.
A member of the Hurricanes women's team, and island native, Laura Younker had this to add on the chance to play at home for the championship.
"It's extremely exciting to be able to host the ACAA Soccer Championships here at home. To be able to play in front of our own friends, family and fans will help provide us with extra motivation to reclaim the ACAA Soccer title that we came so close to winning again last year."
Students in Holland College programs will be involved with all facets of the championships including planning, registration, website, food and beverage, and all the guest services necessary to conduct a championship. This hands-on experience compliments the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to produce a unique blend of applied learning in a formal setting. The timing is ideal for the students to be part of the planning phase and be there through the evaluation stage.
This is the second time that the college has hosted the ACAA Soccer Championships.

Holland College at forefront in fight to end discrimination against international student athletes
The following was released by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA):
Let international students compete, says Civil Liberties Association
Ottawa - The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is urging the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) to drop a discriminatory practice that limits the participation of international student athletes in varsity sports.
"The CCLA opposes unfair discrimination against non-citizens in all areas of law," said Nathalie Des Rosiers, general Counsel for the Association. "We are particularly concerned because later this week, the CCAA will be considering a motion to extend this discriminatory measure and further limit the participation of international students in collegiate varsity sports".
The CCAA is the governing body for collegiate varsity sports in Canada. For the last twenty years it has enforced a policy limiting the number of international students per team - two for basketball and volleyball, and three in soccer. The policy is being reviewed at its Annual Conference in Montreal this week and members will be asked to vote on a motion to extend the restrictions to a number of other varsity sports, including badminton, golf and curling.
The CCLA was alerted to this situation by Holland College of PEI. The college has been pushing to have this policy reversed for several years, arguing that it is contrary to the values of inclusion and participation that are a core element of their brand and that it hurts its ability to recruit internationally.
"At Holland College, we recruit international students from several markets, including the Caribbean and the northeastern United States," said Michael O'Grady, Holland College Vice President, Innovation, Enterprise & Strategic Development.
"But time and again, we hear from prospective students -- and often their friends and family--that restrictions on varsity sports are a negative factor in their consideration of joining our school. At a time when Canadian educational institutions are intent on increasing international student numbers, this discriminatory policy adversely affects our country's reputation as a welcoming post-secondary destination."
Last year the college had written to the Minister of Amateur Sport urging him to use his good offices to have the policy withdrawn.
The CCLA has written to all college presidents and their athletic directors urging them to vote to eliminate discriminatory policy in favour of an even playing field for all student athletes.
