Atlantic Police Academy

In the fast-paced world of law enforcement, ensuring that you get the law enforcement training and upgrading you need while balancing the demands of the profession is a challenge. The Atlantic Police Academy provides students with the means to rise to that challenge.

The Atlantic Police Academy, a division of Holland College, is the pre-eminent law enforcement training institution in Canada. Offering both full time and in-service programs, the Academy trains men and women who want to enter the field of law enforcement, and offers advanced training to dedicated law enforcement professionals who need to upgrade their skills or acquire new skills in order to effectively apply new technology in their jurisdictions.

Since the Academy opened its doors in 1971, thousands of law enforcement professionals have received the training they needed to enter and remain in the field. Graduates from the Academy can be found working across Canada, and law enforcement professionals from all over the country turn to the Atlantic Police Academy when they need further training.

In-Service Training

In addition to its full time law enforcement programs, the Academy offers in-service courses in specialized areas for experienced law enforcement officers. The courses are delivered at advanced levels at the Atlantic Police Academy and on site, depending on the training requirements. These courses are suitable for any officer and agency involved with professional law enforcement.

Technology and Training

The Academy provides current and future law enforcement personnel with high quality hands-on practical and professional training. Located at Slemon Park near Summerside, the Academy recently completed an $8.5 million renovation project that expanded and updated the facility and its technology, enabling the Academy to significantly add to its programs. The renovations are part of the process of continual appraisal of resources that ensures that the programs offered at the Academy are relevant, meet the highest professional standards, and reflect the constantly changing demands of the justice and emergency response professions.

At the Atlantic Police Academy, classroom sizes are carefully controlled to ensure that a safe student/teacher ratio is maintained. High quality contemporary training standards are employed in all of the Academy's programs, and students learn using the latest equipment and resources including:

  • The most technologically advanced live fire indoor range in Canada;
  • A unique and tactically innovated Interactive Crime Scene Village and Domestic Residence;
  • A Simmunitions (paintball) Interactive High Risk Training Centre;
